How to unscrew bleeding nipple?

I'm having a difficult time unscrewing the caliper nipple to get air out. I know the rest of the precedures in the bleeding process but just having a hard time with the nipple.

I've been trying to use pliers and pulling the thing upwards but no luck.

Am i suppose to unscrew it with a small wrench at the base where the nipple protrudes out of?

I also lost the rubber caps that go on the nipples. are the caps needed?

Might be a good idea to use a flare nut wrench so you lessen the chance off rounding it off.
just my .002. it should just unscrew.
