2nd Generation Throttle sticking at idle, how to fix?

This has been going on for a while, but whenever i come to a complete stop and shift out of gear into neutral, the throttle sticks and the car will idle at around 1,000 rpm's. To solve the problem, all i do is tap the gas pedal, and it goes down to about 4-500 rpm's at idle. What could be causing this? And how can i fix this sticking problem? thanks

Clean your throttlebody.

Buy a Chiltons manual if you don't know how.

Clean your throttle body and adjust it so you get a little bit better throttle response. i did both of these things to my throttle body when it was sticking a few months ago and wow what a difference. i have an 89 gen 2 with the 3sfe and a slushbox and with the adjusted throttle i can go about 5mph faster in first and second gear before it shifts. quite hot and spicy. good luck bro.

get a can of throttle body cleaner spray or carberator cleaner spray at a local auto parts shop.. they're both basicly the same....disconnect the rubber pipe that runs from the air box to the throttle body... spray some in there clean it off with some towel paper.. open up the throttle spray and clean... keep doing that till you can see everything's clean in there..... don't be alarmed if you start up the car after cleaning it.. the car might die out...happened to me after i cleaned it but the next start up is fine.

the way i cleaned the tb was i took the rubber line that goes from the valve cover to the tb off with the motor running and then sprayed tb cleaner into the hole as i was revving the motor. make sure to keep the motor revved when you're doing this or it'll stall. you should see a nice cloud of white smoke coming out the back indicating that you're cleaning out all the crap that has crusted inside the tb as well as inside the intake manny. As for adjusting the throttle you'll want to loosen the nut on the throttle cable that goes right over the top of the valve cover. once you loosen this nut you'll be able to slide the throttle cable away from the tb thus creating more tension and making the throttle response tighter. the throttle cable is in an L shaped bracket about dead center between the intake manny and valve cover. after you slide over the throttle cable, tighten down both nuts and you'll be good to go. test the throttle to make sure that the idle is low because if you pull over the cable too much the throttle may be slightly open when you start it. good luck.

i went and checked out my throttle cable to see where the nut is you were talking about, and i couldnt find the nut. Above the valve cover, the cable is wraped in a protective rubber hose, then it goes through a type of threaded screw, and when it comes out the other side there is a little red nipple then the throttle cable is exposed to bear metal, then it connects to the L shaped bracket. Where is this nut that i need to loosen? You think you could take a picture of what it looks like and where it is? thanks

^ On my gen 2, theres 3 cables.

1. Gas pedal to cruise control actuator. This one is not adjustable as one of the adjusting nuts is fixed.

2. Cruise control actuator to throttle body. In my case, this is the cable I would adjust.

3. Tranny kickdown cable. Goes from the tranny to the throttle body.

#2 is bolted to a little bracket, which then bolts onto the front of the intake manifold.

If you look at the bracket, you'll see a nut on each end of the threaded portion of the cable.

Loosen up the nuts on each end and adjust it so that it pulls on the cable more.

In other words you want the threaded portion of the cable to move more towards the left. This will cause it to pull on the cable more.

Don't adjust it to much, otherwise the throttle body will start opening and you'll have a constant high idle.
