Hi guys,
How important is the anti-squeal spring???
I remove the wheel for a brake check and notice that on my Gen3 Camry the right front anti-squeal is missing...is that what cause the squeak noise while i wass driving???
How important is the anto-squeal spring????

is it making noise constantly?
yes its fairly important. there should be two of them for each side. i'd replace them.
you dont want uneaven pad wear, it will ruin your rotors much faster than normal, it will ruin your pads much faster than normal, it might even cause your whole wheel hub to heat up more than normal. i'd suggest putting new springs in on both front sides.
You may eliminate the anti squeal shims if you use some type of "disk brake quiet" on the back of the pads. This can be spray or finger applied. The lack of the original shims will not cause a braking problem or any excessive pad or rotor wear. It is a benign noise. You will simply experience some high pitched noise when driving and the brakes are not being applied. This noise is caused by the pads actually vibrating within the caliper when they are not forced against the rotor by the hydraulic pressure produced by stepping on the barke pedal. Either the Toyota shims or the disk brake quiet will eliminate this noise. The disk brake quiet is a tacky substance applied to the back of the pads which makes the pads stick to the caliper (piston on one side and caliper itself on the other) until hydraulic pressure is applied. This sticking eliminates the vibration and therefore eliminates the high pitched noise.
How hot do pads get under normal usage? Obviously they get real hot when used constantly as the discs will even get red and that's quite a hunk of iron to heat up to red hot. I was wondering, cus if they didn't get that hot (<550) a dab of silicone would probably work fine to keep them connected to the caliper and piston. If they get hotter than that it would just burn off. So how much do replacement anti-squeel springs cost? I'm suprised at how cheap OEM quality brake parts can be had for these days.
anti squal stuff is like $.99 at the auto store they have it by the register usually with the battery grease and crap like that get 2 of those and you are set, shims usually come with the new pads not sure if you can buy them seperatly
Toyota brake pads used to come with the shims as a package. Now they are sold seperately. I have opted to use Raybestos full ceramic pads on my 2 Camrys because of the increased longevity of them.
If you are going to use the spray disk brake quiet stuff, I would purchase a spray can of the stuff for around $6. It will last for many many years and many many brake jobs. I have had good luck over the years with Permatex Spray Disc Brake Quiet. YMMV.
Went to the dealer today to get ready for my front disc brake job. Front disc (ceramic) brakes, shim kit, spring kit, plus tax was $69.41. I plan on keeping this car a while longer, so I keep replacing with OEM parts as much as possible. Probably could get away with out purchasing new shims and springs, after awhile these shims get pitted and I figure the smoother the surfaces the less chance of noise popping up later on. And springs and clips always loose tension over time. If it was just a lease return, I would have slapped a cheapy set of pads on it and let it go.
