well my car is american too, it has 230,000miles on it, and it runs fine. It was leaking oil alot until we had to change the seal between the engine and tranny so we did and its running fine.. Other than that it has no sign of death, and still running strong

when i got a rebuilt on my old blazer, they bored out the cylinders, put bigger pistons in, put two new cam covers on, replaced the oil pump, and water pump. if you just do that....it will perform for much longer.
btw.....176000 isnt all too bad, but its a good idea to rebuild

Do a compression and leakdown test on the engine.

Time? Doing the work yourself or having a shop do it?
Cost? Not really sure.
The engine needs to be removed from the car and completely torn down. Block needs to be honed (do it yourself or have a machine shop / engine builder do it).
Rings, main bearings, rod bearings, gaskets, bolts, etc.. need to be replaced.
If the cylinder head/heads are in good condition just have them cleaned up and replace whatever is necessary.
Fill me in to I have 76,000 on my 3vz-fe but I wan to rebuild myn myself anyway due to turbo charging in the future...near future? Where can I get the parts, and how you think it would take for a professional because I have friends that know what they are doing!
actually me my dad an my brother r gonna do it, well at least im gonna try an help.so my brother made me print all this stuff off the internet on the engine so i know what it is.....im learnin once i get the money ill let u guys know how it went...wish me luck!
You'll have to look around and see who has parts for your engine.
Piston rings, main bearings, and rod bearings are pretty much universal. Just need to know the measurements.
If you want anything custom made like lower compression forged pistons or billet rods just contact the manafacturer directly and see what they can do. You'll most likely have to send them one of stock pistons or rods so they can measure it up.

That depends on your friends.
Rebuilding a motor is not to bad. My buddie and I have rebuilt several motors (he keeps blowing them up).
