Yet another coolant flush thread

Started the process of flushing my coolant today (94 V6 XLE) and I found flakes in my reservoir. The bottom of the reservoir was dirty also. Any idea as to what the junk is? I flushed it last year and had a similar residue. System has no leaks and the water pump was done last year as well.

As part of the process, I tried to get the drain plug off the "front" bank but couldn't. It's on there tight and I didn't want to risk stripping it. Two 'tard questions: do I turn the 10mm portion or the 14mm portion of the plug, and; which way? (lefty loosey, righty tighty?)

Also, has anyone used the Prestone (or other) flush and fill kit for a flush? Is it worth using?

i dk about the drain plugs, but the flakes might be iron deposites from the radiator
