2nd Generation How do you get to the 3.5" Speakers in the Dash?

Just curious, I have a set of Pioneer 4" speakers and want to install them but I am a little stumped on how to get to them. Id pull the cover off but it feels like it doesnt want to come off.

The front speakers on a gen 2 are a bitch to get to.

Drivers side:

1. Remove the black plastic piece going across the bottom of the dash. Theres 2 screws.

2. Remove the panels (dimmer switch and cruise control switch) on each side of the steering wheel. Theres bolts hidden behind the panels.

3. Remove the speaker grill. Bolt hidden behind the grill.

4. Remove the hood release latch. IIRC theres 2 screws holding it to the dash. Pull the hood release latch forward and remove the cable from it.

5. Remove the 4 bolts on the lower corners of the dash. 2 bolts in each corner.

Pull off the dash and you'll the speaker + housing towards the top left of the dash.

Passenger side:

You need to remove the lower dash + glovebox. Theres a bunch of bolts and screws just like the drivers side.

P.S. The front speakers are 3.5" with a 4" passive radiator.

88 LE, I ran into a problem at this step: Remove the panels (dimmer switch and cruise control switch) on each side of the steering wheel. There is a little square red button next to the cruise button (which I dont know what it's for) and though I can pop out the panel that the red button is on, I cant do anything else because I cant pop out the whole cruise panel. Any help?

I can't get to it. The flathead moved it a little but it seems stuck in there.

^ That piece does pop out. Try prying from the side instead of the bottom.

Oh, the guy I bought my speakers from threw in some capacitors and apprarently they filter out low bass frequencies so that the speakers won't blow. What do you think, should I put them on?

88 LE, for the passenger side, is it just the four screws on the bottom of the dash plus remove the glovebox? There's a screw on the metal grating protecting the speaker but it looks like it's connected to the dash support. I don't think I can angle my screwdriver to get to those speaker screws.

^ I believe so.

You don't need to remove the speaker screws in order to remove the dash.

Actually for what your doing, you don't need to remove the dash at all. I'd remove the headunit/stereo and wire in the caps to the wires going to the headunit.
