no, if your headgasket is BLOWN, you have oil in your coolant and vice versa, if its leaking, it is leaking oil from the head gasket outside fo the motor (and not nesecarly into your coolant). either way it cost the same. prolly about $800 for one bank.

If u have proper tools and experience its nothing a long weekends work cant handle. You can hand the trohpy to Toyota for making shitty head gaskets for 3vz and 1mz camrys as well as the earlier supras, Mk3 and such. And if ur head gasket completely blew i believe u would drastically lose oil pressure which is a big problem, but im not positive. And i wouldnt go as far as $800. Standard compensation for a mechanic ranges but on avg lets say about $50-60/hour. I highly highly doubt itll take 16hours of work for a quality mechanic, id say more like 3-7 (which is a wide range but some mechanics are slow and others work hard) depending on which gasket it is.
if you dont know if thats where your car is leaking from dont mess with it .... wash down your engine bay and then watch to see if there any leaks .... if you dont see any then it's being lost in your engine .... also wouldnt a compression test be able to show a bhg?

you ever changed a heagasket on the V6? i was quoted between 600-1,000 for one bank for mine.
i can do the front bank headgasket on my car in a few (maybe 4 probably less) hours.
the rear though, thats a bitch!
BTW mechanic rates in my area range betweren $70-$85 an hour. the toyota dealers usually charge around $100 an hour and i have seen lexus dealers as high as $120 an hour.

It doesn't really matter how fast the mechanic is. If the book says a head gasket job takes 5 hours to do, that's how much the mechanic gets paid. If the mechanic can do it in 3 hours, he'll still get paid for 5. That's how you make money in that business. Opposite is true if it takes more than x hours to do it.

Thats y i said it depends which one it is, im fully aware the back one is an absolute bitch w/o a doubt. ur quote seems too high but i guess it depends on the garage, mine around here i can find for a lot less than $70-85/hr. Of course luxury cars are going to be more expensive thats a given and they work in a completely different environment if uve ever taken notice. A regular toyota dealership shop is normally pretty dirty and grease everywhere, when u go to a place like BMW everything is freakin like spotless last time i went to one, its a lot more professional.
And as for the guy who was talking about looking it up in the books, ive never heard of a garage charging for 5hrs for 3hrs of work in the sense ur tallking about. Of course they overcharge im sure but the time in the books like u say are usually only for reference for things like quotes and such. If it takes longer in the books u get charged more, if its less time, if they're honest, theyll charge less, most places will steal ur money though anyway
