I just bought a toronto camry, and now i am in the US, as you guys have heard probably...
It is a 95 camry and the speedo and gauges are in kilometers, so is the odometer...
2 questions about replacing the cluster...
1) will the odometer start reading correctly in miles if i get a US odometer, or will it read the miles as kilometers, basically does anybody know what causes it to move as kilometers or miles, is that in the gauge cluster or in the car's programming
2) the car has ABS and used to be an automatic, but is now a manual...i have found some clusters for manuals that do not have the PRND2L on them, which is nice, but i don't think any of those cars are equipped with ABS... so is that going to be a problem placing in a cluster that didn't have ABS... i don't care about the dummy light not being there, i just want everything else fine

if you want to do the speedometer, just get the reverse glow gauges.
I'm afraid to say, but if you do the odometer, you're looking at having to deal with having a dealer put a 'this car had the odometer replaced at xxx miles' sticker on your car.
I don't think that the cluster has anything to do with the abs besides for the light...
and about the odometer- I'd say just walk into toyota and ask to speak to a mechanic- they should be able to tell you how it works and probably what to do too

Oh, didn't check the second half of the question:
ABS lights are present in all gen3's (as far as I've seen).
My car does not have ABS but does have the bulb, if I recall correctly.
I'll check in a couple minutes to confirm.
I believe it's just unlight. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Actually....you might find this interesting. 1st...do the reverse indiglos, good mod and will cure the problem.
secondly, you can mess with the odometer, but after it turns 100k, it locks the left most number. But if your vehicle is 10 years old, so most DMV's couldn't care less about that...I know in NYS it means nothing. Not that I break laws...often.
Take it to the dealer.
Expensive, but changing an odometer yourself is illegal, AFAIK.
Your best bet would be swapping the entire gauge cluster out.
no no no, that is what i mean, i want to switch out my entire cluster, with a US cluster... I am wondering if i swap out the whole thing will it start reading miles, or will it keep rolling as kilometers? What i need to know is what lets the odometer turn as kilometers vs. miles?
I will probably just by a US cluster and roll the miles so they are equal to the conversion from kilometers... I am not going to be lying about the car mileage - but instead making it exactly what it should be, and anybody who buys this car after me will know that

I think the gearing or speed of the odometer drive motor is just different. On the motor it says xxxx revolutions per mile. You might compare the two and see if it all matches up. To change the new one to the right mileage, just snap out the bar with the cogs on it, roll the numbers to read the right value, then snap it back in and make sure everything rolls freely. If it doesn't look like it will snap out, you can notch the plastic that's molded around it with a razor blade so that it will. I fucked up my cluster by trying to clean it with lacquer thinner to get the glue from my reverse glows off, well it completely removed the black face. So I got a new cluster and fixed the mileage.
Edit:
It's good to see that SBC is in good hands. It's a beautiful car, especially the interior.
nate, the problem is, I don't think you can 'roll miles' on an odometer.
You can get a new one and it'll be set at 0. I don't think you can reset an odometer to a specific mileage.
I'm not questioning if your reasoning is legitimate, I'm just stating why it's illegal.
I'd really just take this one to the Dealer so they put the sticker on, so if anyone else would buy the car they could have proof of the mileage and so you don't have to worry about any of the crap involved.
sorry for reviving an old thread :p
So can you or can you not roll odometers?
I'm looking to get a US camry, would really like to convert to km for here in canada... lol
Did anybody do this? I'm assuming it should me popular than going from km to miles :p
