Is it actually a button?
It very well may just be the hole you pop to remove the shifter itself. (just a 'hidden' panel)

I have the same car, and saw that button when I pried the cover off a few weeks ago, but not knowing what it does/did, never pushed it.

I as well ask, what is it?

mine doesnt have a cover..I bought the car used so it may have been there before...I guess when the wife gets home I will try and see if it is a override for the gear selector...it feels like an electrical button...not mechanical...it clicks..but jus dont know what it does...must be the grease button for that squeaking exhaust bearing or to let ya know when your blinker fluid is low..thanx

I had to use that button the other day on a new Matrix. The battery died while I was on a test drive, and I had to put the car in nuetral to get it off the road. It wouldn't let me do it because the battery was dead, so I pushed that button in and it let me switch it into nuetral.

That's the reason for that button.

Take that out, stick something in such as your car's key, then you can shift freely.
