right, sorta...

When you switched it off, you may have forced the tranny to switch into 3rd gear from 4th. Turning off O/D keeps the car from shifting into 4th, and that's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

With it off, you stay in 3rd gear, but with it on you enable the engine to shift into first. It doesn't matter that much when you're racing because everyone starts in 1st gear.
