Most likely the upper strut mounts are shot. This is a known problem on the generation 4 Camrys. Toyota has redesigned these strut mounts twice to correct the problem, although they won't recall these cars; it's not an emission or safety related issue. This is not a cheap fix as the struts have to come out to do this and then the springs have to be removed from the struts. Most people ignore it till it's time to replace the struts and replace the strut mounts then. I called Toyota corporate about this a few months ago. The customer service rep said there is no recall or special service campaign covering this "but if enough people call in to complain about it at the corporate level Toyota just might decide to do something about it". The phone number is 800-331-4331, so everybody with a generation 4 Camry should start calling and complaining. Maybe we can get them to issue a recall for this problem.

I had that problem on my gen3 - turned out the top strut mount bolts (visible in engine bay) were loose...just tightened them up and no more clicking

check that out, yo.

most likely strut mounts. strut mounts are like 99$ for the front, parts only.

i am also having the same prob in my gen 4.5.

will change out the strut mount if and when I lower my car + change struts. $600 job + my own labor.

jagwire,

Take it in for an alignment and let them diagnose the problem. They won't do the alignment if you have a problem with the suspension or steering. You don't have let them fix it, but return to them for the alignment when you've had it fixed. Should give them somthing for the diagnosis.

I think you could have a balljoint problem, or one of the bushings for the control arm is worn. Either will give you a clunk on a rut.

just pop the hood and look to your left/right - on the very edge there are three bolts in a triangular pattern with one in the center - those are your strut bolts

while ya checking those bolts.. look at the bit in between it all that black area with teh big bolt.. yoreu nto looking at the big bolt itsefl but the area around it.. it should not be open... push down on ya car, it should all move together.. if the middle bit isnt moving with te rest of ya car (or its loose).. the strut top is gone,
