With the 2002 Altima, it's supposed to compete head to head with the new Camry and the Accord, do you think Toyota will loose with the new Camry design??

Its hard to say right now because the Camry is underpowered and is expensive but compared to the Accord and Altima it drives and looks better IMO.If people actualy take the 3 cars and drive them they will see that the Camry is still the king of luxury and quality. The only thing i can realy see is that Toyota will bring the displacement up on the V6 and probably we will have a 3.5 litter 2004 Camry and ES350,if they dont they will loose very fast..
First, I want to say that Nissan has made a very stupid and unreasonable move. Before the debut of the current generation Maxima, Maxima is the rival of Camry V6 and Accord V6, and Altima is the rival of Camry and Accord 4-cylinder. Then, with the new Altima introduced, it blurs the boundary between Maxima and Altima. This will only make one of them die pretty soon since they are about equal in every spec (expect Maxima looks a little bit better).
Second, I'd say Altima is a completely design failure. Yes, it is powerful with either 2.5 liter 180hp or 3.5 liter 240hp engine. However, considering its poor fuel consumption, ugly exterior, and cheesy interior, it will NOT affect Camry and Accord at all. You can say that Altima is made for Americans, as they only know about the raw power. The potential buys of Camry and Accord hardly lay their eyes on Altima.
Afterall, Camry with 1MZ-FE isn't underpowered (my personal opinion), but Toyota definitely can do some tune on it and drop a manual box on the 2003 SE.
1MZ-FE is not underpowered. It was one of the most powerful V6 engines in family sedans back in 94-96 period. Moreover, Toyota refuses to add VVT-i to the Camry because it will take customer away from buying ES.
I've heard some bad things about the chessy interior of the Altima. But I mean, Camry is still a Camry, there's nothing that can replace it when people want rock-solid reliability and safety in their family car. And if I want performance sedan I can go buy an IS.
well the maxima could be on avalon's level, but it doesn't appear as luxurious as the avalon and is more sporty.
also the 2003 accord is supposed to get a 250hp v6 or in that area, so of the big 4, camry will be in the back with 192hp. (assuming maxima has ~255-260, accord has ~245-250, and galant has 200 now, but could get an increase as well).
and the ES needs to get a different engine. its just a spiffed up camry and they sell just a crazily as camrys do, but as long as the ES shares the platform they'll keep using the same engine layouts, thus hindering the camry's bump. but the ES should be on par with infiniti, acura, and etc so if they bump ES up to say, 250, then camry can get at least a 230hp engine...
In my opinion, I'd take the Maxima over all the above cars, no second thoughts at all. It's just so much sportier than the Avalon and Camry...not as reliable but still better than the average car. We used to have 2 Gen3 Max's, loved them although they had a lot of repairs. Oh, and today my brother just picked up a black 1998 Maxima SE, only 28,000 km! Once in awhile, I think about selling my Cam and buying a used Max. Now there's 3 Nissans and 1 Toyota at my house!!! Sorry guys, don't hate me, I'm not a traitor....
Planning to test drive the Altima, my friend's friend owns a Nissan dealership...gotta drive that V6!
I saw the new Altima last week on the road. It looks pretty decent. I have to agree with Kamuri, that the dependabilty and realiabilty of a Toyota is untouchable (for the same class of cars.) Having said that, if I were looking for a new car, I would "consider" the Altima.

98 Max!!! NICE! I wanted to get a gen 4 Max as a tradein for my Camry, but then I thought that whatever my next car is going to be, is going to be my car for a long time. A late 90's Max is pretty expensive still. It is possible to get a MKIV Supra for a little more $ and you get a whole lotta goodies with it! Another option is STILL a Lexis GS400/430 because that is sort of the same type of car as the Camry and Maxima but more luxurious and a hell of a lot faster! So it depends what my taste is like when I am ready to buy... MKIV Supra TT or Lexus GS400/430
