Question 5SGTE Problem! Please help

Hey I got a problem putting together my 5SGTE. I got a 92 5SFE block out of a Celica and a 92(i think) head off of a 3SGTE motor. Everything bolted up fine just after putting on the timing belt and spinning the crank a few times the piston taps one of the valves. I believe it is the exhaust vavles that are hitting the piston because they are a little longer than the 5SFE exhaust valves. Is there anybody who ran into this problem and can help me fix this timing problem??? Thanks for any response.

did you do a bunch of machining to the head or block?
or is it timed top dead center?

I want to try this sometime. I think that the 3sgte is a non interference engine to begin with anyways, so this shouldn't happen... but I am not a 3sgte pro...

You can cheat and pickup a thicker headgasket and simply run that. Comectic makes them for the 5S-FE and I know horsepowerfreaks.com carries them. Just search under celica (camry will for some reason not show all of them).

If you get an oversized headgasket this should cure your problems. I would suggest that you just get new (bowled) pistons with lower CR anyway. If you intend on boost, this will save you loads of time while the engine is already out of the car.

Ummm.... you will need custom pistons with the correct valve reliefs. You can't just bolt the head an block together without any work.

Also, make sure the oil and water passages line up correctly!
