Uneven tire wear

Okay here's the deal. I have a set of tires 205 40 17 mounted on 17x7 Enkei wheels on my camry and it's wearing weird. I noticed that the edges of the tires are wearing more than the center of the tires. I've researched and it means i need to put in more air right? I just checked the pressure but it's already at 38psi?!! I just checked the max pressure and it says 44psi. Could i fill it up past that 44 psi or no?

If I am right, I don’t think it is a good idea to go over the max amount of air pressure that your tire should have. I believe this can make it easier for your tire to blow or wear. Not to sure though, so wait until other people respond.

that happened to me at 32 psi but that wasnt the problem, the problem was that the tires needed balancing, causing them to spin awkwardly and wearing out the outer treads...just an idea

It could be balancing or air pressure.

Get then aligned and balanced and see if the tread continues to wear strange on them. Rotate them too if you want a fresher tread to guage how they are wearing.

You mentioned air pressure.... should I add more or what? I get that i need to balance them first but what about air pressure?

a 40 series tire needs 40 psi. if u are getting unusual wear at the edges thats do to under inflation. if it were the center, it would be over inflation. it's very important to keep those low profile tires properly inflated..i'm running the same size as u.. I have a friend who owns a Goodyear dealership here. he educated me on this...my goodyears are over a year old and about 12k miles on them. they are wearing very evenly

wtf? 40 series tire need 40 psi? whered you learn about tires?

anyway...if its the outside edge on the fronts you're prolly taking your turns a bit fast if its on the inside edge, something is out of alignment.

for your everyday driving...cant go wrong with 32 psi.

well I'd understand if only one side of the tires are worn but it's both sides. Also there are no vibrations or pulls or anything. The inside and the outside are both wearing evenly but quicker than the center. Like i said earlier, I researched and checked that this kind of indication SHOULD mean underinflation but the tires are already at 38psi....

could it be that the wheels are too wide for the tires? Because the tires have to spread out more, the edges of the tread stick out more than the center? Does this make any sense?

no, your wheels are not too wide for the tires. In fact, that is the recommended width. I have 17x7 too 205/40 fr and 215/40 rr..no problem what so ever.. and 1 1/2 yrs and 12k miles is more than enough to reveal a problem. a 40 series tire is very low profile.. u wouldn't want it to be too soft or you're gonna dent your rims and have the problem you have now. you said it was wearing out on both sides. that is a classic indication of under inflation. try it before u have to buy another set of tires.. 40 psi is what is recommended. family cars with reg radials use 32psi..think about it.. anyway, u can always call the place u got the tires from and ask them...the ride will be stiffer, but thats normal for this type performance tire..

Since I've started to work at Costco tire center I' ve learned that any uneven tire wear could be due to bad struts and/or alignment . That is if your tires have been properly inflated (usually 35psi). And if you kick it up to the max psi like they said you risk blowing the tire.
