I heard a strange ticking noise last night from the crankshaft area. I was going at a pretty high rate of speed for me, 85mph. And when I got off the expressway, I heard a ticking noise.
The higher the engine speed, the more it ticked. I was 40 miles away from home and on a job assignment so I was kind of because I didn't want to get stuck out there and I only had 1/2 bar left on cell phone power.
I started driving home and when I got on the expressway, the sound went away.
When I got home, I sat in the driveway for a few seconds and the sound didn't come back.
Why would this happen?
Any ideas or comments?
No dummy lights came on, didn't lose any fluids...
I have to go out later today and I'll see if the noise is there with start up. Yesterday, it was there at start up but went away by the time I got 3-4 houses down the street.

More than likely it's just the lifters knocking around due to low oil in the head. Definately I think that's the cause if it's only happening during times of lower oil pressure. (start up etc)
If that's the case it's not a pressing issue.

It has me worried because I don't want to have any costly repairs and because I want to sell my '88 'Vette and get a newer 'Vette this summer.
.
You know-my bad. I read this above and thought you ment your vette. Forgive me I am blonde.
It could be a bearing, located inside the case located on the side of the engine. Anyone who knows what I am talking about can help me explain.

If it was a bad rod bearing, the noise wouldn't go away... in fact it would get progressively louder until the bearing lets go with results that, to varying degrees, can be catastrophic. Sounds like a lifter to me. Also check that your exhaust manifold bolts are snug, this would be more of a ticking noise but like a lifter the noise goes away when the motor gets warm (metal expands when it gets hot, "sealing" the leak). Loose bolts of course wuold cause this leak.

My neighbor and father had a listen to it today before I left. They both think it's a lifter issue on the rear bank.
It went away by the time I drove 3 houses down the street. I think I'm going to leave it because it doesn't look like getting to the rear lifters will be an easy task.
What do you guys think? Should I leave it for now? It's running fine and the noise goes away.
I noticed the noise after I was driving 80mph the other night on the expressway.
