Can a leaky/broken egr gasket cause stalling?

Well, I've had this stalling problem for months now, sometimes when coming to a stop, or stopped already, my car just stalls. Sometimes it cranks right back up, sometimes I have to hold the gas and crank it for a while (in bursts, even up to like 5 minutes). I've been talking to a Toyota mechanic online but he's from Oregon or something so I obviously can't have him work on my car. He says, from the symptoms I described, that it's most likely EGR related. I've inspected my distributor and it seems fine. I also replaced plugs and wires and more recently the valve cover gasket (unrelated, needed to be done anyway).

I finally found a way to get to that damn union nut that holds the EGR valve on. Anyway, so I finally get it off and the bottom left quarter of the EGR valve gasket is just missing (in such a way that air could move from in between the valve and the throttle body). I'm about to goto the parts store to see if they have them there so that I can replace it, but want to know if this could be causing the problem. Also, is it worthwhile to replace the whole EGR valve? the car is 10 years old after all and the outside of a good portion of the thing is rusted up.

Remove airbox and air duct, get at it from the side with about 10 degrees to work with. I had to use an adjustable wrench which was a pain in the add. The nut is 2.5 cm, so I set the wrench to that, and then taped over the adjuster thing so I didn't accidently adjust it (happened a bunch so I did that). What I would do is turn it like 1/6 turn with the wrench one way, then flip it upside down and do the same. Took me about half an hour just to get that nut off.

anyone?

RANT: I love how everyone on this forum is concerned about intakes and LEDs but most know nothing about how a car works.

Cool

Hey watch it... That's a question you could easily answer yourself with a book so... A single leak of EGR can throw a cylinder very rich. Obivously the ECU's can't correct for that. If the ECU goes to open the valve during idle/cruising and no EG is R'ed, it'll run lean.

If it constantly does one or the other enough, the ECU isn't able to trim it out with fuel trims fast enough.

Take the entire system off and clean it. The valve, and the controls for it.

Key word that people seem to miss is gasket. Like between the throttle body and the body of the egr system. I mean, my guess is no since only a little air could leak through, I think.
