today while driving on the highway, almost missed my exit on express and so i stepped on the pedal slightly harder and it all of a sudden jumped to 5000rpm but it didn't speed up at all. felt like it was just spinning there. i let the gas go a bit and it went back down to under 4000rpm.
after that happened, when i tried to accelerate it would kind of stall before accelerating. good thing i was really near my exit. at the first traffic light after the exit i had to stop. but when i tried to go again. the car wouldn't really accelerate.. the rpm would go up but i felt no power and it just moved so slowly. i tried letting go of pedal and really lightly pressing it a few times. but after a while my car just completely stopped.
2 lights came on the dash... a 'check' light and one that shows a car with ||| on each side of the rear.
i shut off the car, turned it back on and it ran fine again... but i was afraid to accelerate hard again...
did i permanantly damage my car? what happened? i didn't mess anything up did i?
btw i hv a 93 i4...
and i just changed the oil 2 weeks ago... changed transmission fluid back in oct... flushed engine coolant in feb...

Yea knowing if its a manual or auto will help us abit. Also if it just went to 5K RPM id say yer fine. But if you havnt maintained your engine id check it out.
That happen to mah moms Toyota Previa..the problem to her van was the Fuel pump..after mah dad changed it..it ran fine..like you said..after you turn the engine off..and turn it back on..it runs fine..so its gotta be the fuel pump.. ..But thats only to what i experience on mah mom's Previa..

I think the car didn't go anywhere because after you probably dropped to 2nd gear while going like, 140, the revs jumped to 5K, where your engine has no power
it probably made your knock sensors go crazy tho, or your car didn't dump enough fuel into the engine when the rpms suddenly humped, and caused the check-engine light, which will result your car to go into "safe mode" and dump even more fuel into the chambers, thus giving you no power later on too
if after you turned on your car again there is no CEL or any problems otherwise, then it should be fine

In my gf's 04 4runner, i was driving it and it all of a sudden stops accellerating...
Put it in park, the tach would move, but the engine did nothing, then i shifted it into reverse and the thing jumped, shifted into drive and it jumped again.... anything like this happen to the camry?

how does it drop into 2nd gear if i'm accelerating seems scary if it'll happen again. i try and accelerate while changing lanes only to stall again

when i put it in park, i didn't notice the tach moving. but i didn't try putting it in reverse.
However, when my car wouldn't move anymore, i kept trying to accelerate a few times. while in drive, when i completely removed my foot from the pedal for about 1-2 sec (at a complete stop), my car started to slide back. and this was on a VERY SLIGHTLY slanted road. i thought automatics aren't supposed to do that?
i hope there really is nothing wrong with it.. kind of afraid to accelerate too hard for now

when you put your foot down, your automatic transmission will drop a gear in order to make the car go faster. its called kickdown. its normal. i have no idea what would've caused the car to stuff up later. what eye8pussies said sounds plausible.
^ exactly...usually the tranny just drops to 3rd from fourth when you're on the highway....but if you hit the gas REALLY hard AND REALLY fast, then it can drop down to 2nd even when you're already going a good 120, 140....

lol well maybe when he tromped on it.. it caused the gears to slip and jump off?.. strip the gear as well maybe.. not sure.. but thats probably not it cuz my friend did that in a pontiac and it rattled its ass of in first gear all the way home.. (of course i laughed piece of shit) but im not so engine intelligent, so im not oo sure what it could be, doesnt sound to good though
