Yeah, it's POS cuz it's taking up room for MY car to be fixed.

his boost controller malfunctioned and it caused a pressure spike and the 5sfe couldnt handle it without forged internals....i'm pretty sure that's what happened anyways
I've heard nothing but good about Hallman MBC's and many things about the unreliability of EBC's, especially during the winter when the temperature starts affecting the electronics (variability in wire conduction, etc.), unreliable boost readings, unreliable boost controls, and such. At least that's what the general consensus is among Mitsubishi Evo owners. You can search over at www.evolutionm.net if you don't believe me. I believe I've heard about some issues regarding TurboXS MBC's, but I can't recall exactly what it was.
^not exactly... Im not running a standalone. Im running a S-AFC II piggyback.
At the time I was running a Turbo XS dual stage manual boost controller (piece of shit). Low boost was set to be at 8psi... I was coming off an on ramp in 2ng gear late at night so no traffic and I just let it rip all the way to redline. Then the unthinkable happened, my boost controller malfunctioned and boost spiked up to around 15-16psi. Kaboom. I started hearing rod knock immeadiately afterwards AND threw out my stock clutch in the process.
This is why Justin refers to manual boost controllers as "death knobs."
If youre going turbo... Spend the extra cheese to just get an electronic boost controller or just use the stock wastegate setting.
aaahhmmm ... I wonder who tuned your S-AFCII ??? LOL... And made boost come on at 1500 to 2000 rpms instead of 4000 ??? And all that trouble shooting in your car and told you not to install that 'Death Knob'.... LOL just messing with you Allen
^ Nice if you can get your car out there... hahhaa I'm JOOOOOKING Allen.
Lemme drive your scepter when it comes out.

I"m not going all out like you. Just a rebuild, new pistons, piston rings, seals, rework new piping and new BOV, and pretty much clean everything up before sticking it back into the car.

Usually this would have been prevented with some good tuning... Even when I was running E-manage, I was able to retard the timing and dump fuel at higher PSI maps . All boost spike would do is give a nice backfire and no harm to the engine. Without proper mapping in the boost region, you are looking for trouble even if you are running base wastegate pressure. It is hard to prevent annoying things like a cracked vacuum hose, or a hose popping off, etc... to cause a boost spike.
So it's good to learn from that and blowing up a tired old stock motor rather than blowing up a fully built one.
Hey Allen, any updates on the progress?
