Black coating in Halogen

While I was looking at the lights in my camry I notice there is a black coating. Why is there a black coating on the tip of the halogen lights (H4)? Can it be removed in any chance? Thanks!

It's supposed to be there. Light from your headlights is reflected mainly, so that coating on the tip shouldn't affect anything.

So even if I scrape it off it will have no effect?

thats the 9006 bulb (low beam), you can mod a 9005 (high beam) bulb to fit the 9006 socket. Its actually a quite effective mod. Check the CamryFAQ under "MORE LIGHT" for DIY instructions

Do not remove the black coating, because in doing so you probabbly will damage the bulb surface, and may cause it to crack while in use. Anytime you get a bulb, even if new in package, wipe it with an alcohol wipe, to remove any oils too.

agreed, you'll probably scratch the bulb surface, thus weaking it. You'll probalby blow the bulb between the oil and scratches pretty quickly. Get some alchohol swabs and just handle the bulb by it's base.
