exhaust problem?? help!
On the way home my '92 Camry (173K) started hesitating and running roughly. It also sounded like it was running thick, without a muffler. It has no problems getting up to highway speeds, it just hesitates and almost feels like it misfires as it gets there. It continues to feel like a misfire at all speeds.
I'm pretty sure its an exhaust problem because in addition to the noise, its putting out a strong exhaust smell. I crawled around under the car and didn't notice any gaping holes in the exhaust pipe. As silly as it sounds, the muffler is there and seems to be intact.
Here's the thing: over the last week or so, I have noticed a rattling sound which would go away at certain speeds or when the auto transmission changed gears. Ironically, I had planned to have a buddy take a look at it today. Now, there's no more "rattle", but the symptoms I describe above.
My question is, could this be a quick/inexpensive fix? Could something have simply fallen off? Any advice/help would be appreciated. I plan on maybe taking it to a shop but i'd really like to have an idea of what it might be before I take it. I am not an extremely car-savvy person so layman's terms would be appreciated. thanks in advance...i have been a lurker around this board for quite awhile and it has been very helpful.
Thanks again
