On a 1996 4-door sedan Camry, I am trying to remove the driver side rear courtesy switch (ya know...that switch that turns the interior lights on). My question, how do you get to the connector? It's got to be either behind the wheel well or the back seat. This was supposed to be a simple 5-minute fix to swap the switch out.

Anyone have any insight here?
Interesting that you bring this up. My switch on that side in the rear is giving me trouble too..
So, my first plan of attack ( i did this right now) was go to the haynes book...lol no luck. Second plan was i put down the left rear seat and tried to go through from there by prying off the plastic that seems to be the access for the seatbelt. Well what do you know? it was just that, i would only get to the seat belt, but i did see wires.
So i went to the switch itself: if you can describe the black switch as a peanut shap, the top is the actual switch and the lower lobe is just flat----it's just a cover. the lover lobe covers a nut. Unscrew that and you can get the switch out and i assume there is a connector behind it when you pull it out. ===Try this.
Be my guinea pig and tell us how it went, i need to replace mine also. Did you get the switch from the dealer? It's some thing available from an auto parts store?
Good luck guinea pig,
D

there's a courtesy switch? would you mind taking a picture? I'm just curious, cuz I don't think the 92-94 have them...
Huh?
i guess the " Courtesy Switch" is that thing that tells the passengers in the rear that you are about to turn on your elecrtronic turbo,.
lol...yes, you have one, i know because my brother's car (a 93) has it. lol
it's that button the turns on the lights when you open the door.
d.
by the way, how the heck do they get the light in the fridge to come one when we open the door?...or do they leave it on? or it's it a little gremelin they install in there to turn on the lights when we open the fride door? he stays alive by eating our food...think about it, why does our food spoil?
I know what he's talking about now.....just that little button under the black rubber that tells you if the door is open or not.....wow...don't I feel stupid...must be all these damn exams that are giving me brain farts

I know how to remove the switch from the body...that's not the problem. The problem is that this "peanut shaped" switch comes from Toyota with a red pigtail wire. The wire is attached to the switch. The other end has a connector. This is my problem...accessing that connector to separate them. After removing the 10mm bolt so the switch is loose, the connector is still inside the body and inaccessible.
I guess I will try removing the wheel well. This is somewhat ridiculous.

you are right, it is a bit ridiculous, i tried a second look at it...sheesh, that's what i have going for me when i go to replace mine? You would think they'd have made that stupid wire a little longer.
Tell use how you did it. i guess i'll be doing it as soon as i can get a hold of the switch...did you get it at the dealer?
Yeah, I bought mine at the dealer. It was about $12...cheap enough. I thnk list was around $15.
I will be doing the switch sometime this weekend. I was thinking about cutting the wire and making my own connector...just so I could do it my own way. But I think that'd take longer than just pulling the wheel well cover. I think I'm letting pride get in the way!!
okay here's the update on how i did my own repair of the same courtesy light switch:
(by the way, it took so long because i wanted to do the amp at the same time, or rather, i wanted to do the amp and then try to see if i could fix that switch while i had interior parts off)
well what do you know, it was very easy
1)[optional---go to step two, come back to here if you have trouble]
------------- cover off of the left rear inside pillar (the one with the seat belt running through it)
2) Unbolt the shoulder rest (that part that stays on when you open the trunk access)
---the bolt is at the bottom, do it with a hand wrench i believe 9/16, 15mm, or 16mm i forget which...if not enough space, take off the lower seat cushion.
3)remove the seat belt assymbly by taking off the ONE bolt holding it, push the thing up and out.
3) Access gained to that courtesy connector right behind a rubber padding under the seat belt thing
4) remove the bolt holding the actual peanut thing.
5) replace the stwich by acessing the connector fromt inside the cab
