4th Generation When to change Timing Belt ?

I just bought a 2000 XLE V6, with 88,300kms on it.
The dealer told me that it does not need to be changed until 150,000kms..
Having just recently snapped my timing belt on my Honda Prelude, I know that it is
a very costly repair due to the fact that these are interference engines.

Now I wanted to know from owners here, if anyone has had a timing belt snap on them,
and how many kms was it at?

How often should I change this belt?
Thank you kindly,

Morley

I bought my Cam used and of course dealer told me everything was done. Bullshitz. However I use the belts I can see as a guideline, If I start seeing cracks (3 per inch) in the belts, I would change them all out including the timing,

Morley,

I do mine every 100K km or 60 mi, to avoid towing and retiming due to the belt breaking.

My first 2SE belt went to 180K km before breaking, my first 5SFE belt broke at 137K km. Both broke 100Km out of the nearest town and towing was costly. Both the 2SE and 5SFE are on their fifth belt. I haven't changed my 1MZE belt yet.

Two things you should consider are the low temperature during winter, -30C and even -40Cor -45C, can take some km off the life of a belt.

yeah, just take a look at the belt and see if it's cracked...

otherwise, go with OEM belts and find out how long they last.

My dad's belt was goin bad (94 corolla) at about 160k miles .. not to bad

Cool

Check at 60,000m, replace at 90,000m. Convert that and there's your schedule.

Toyota has that schedule for a reason LoL!

This one was changed by Lexus at 60,000m, it split in half at 105,000m on the highway when it hit 143mph after I rebuilt the heads.

This one... Was I think the wrong size (missing a tooth), and it snapped in half in a day or two.

From what I know the look of the belt doesn't tell you much. They usually fail catastrophically. Now if they look cracked thats something, but if they look "fine" they can still snap same day.

a v6 would cost you about 300$ to change the timing belt.
4cyl would be around 200$.

check manual, there is a schedule.

gen 4.5 (2000-2001) requires/suggest changing belt at 90k. might be worth while to chnage the water pump.
