If the motor turns over normally (quickly) after the starter engages, replace the starter. If the motor turns over slowly (and barely starts) replace the battery.
Simple.

The next time this happens, have a second person hold the key in the on position while you go out and whack the starter with a small hammer or wrench. Don't whack it hard enough to brake the case, just a few medium taps. If the starter then engages and the motor turns over, you have bad contacts inside the starter. This is relatively cheap and easy for the DIY to replace, much cheaper than replacing the starter and it only takes about an extra 15 minutes. Just do a search for "starter contacts" on this forum.
You don't have to hold the key in the ON position, just whack the starter when this happens.. then try to start the car again.. if it starts fine after the starter was hit, then you know its your starter for sure.
Nearly always in this order when an engine won't crank:
1) Clean contacts
2) If serviceable battery, Check for fluid level. Add water if the plates are not covered (try to crank now)
3) Recharge battery
4) Get to Autoparts store, and have the Alternator & bettery tested. If ALT is OK, replace battery, and vice-versa.
