Gen1 A tranny question

The tranny in my Gen 1 is dying. Is there an additive I can use to extend it's life a little longer? It's not worth it to rebuild the tranny. The car too rusted to put a new tranny in it.

wut are the "signs" of it dying? If u wait too long sumtimes it can result in death...almost happened to me already, my trans in my 91 prism (which at the time was still Toyota)made some wierd noises and wasnt acting right, i drove with it anyway to my fathers house, on the way back from ther only about 200ft down the road or so my gear became baiscally shredded and slipped into park at about 25mph sending me into a skid for about 15ft or so, 10mins longer i would have been on the highway doin about 65-70mph when it woulda happened. If my trans ever showed signs of failure i, personally, wouldnt f* with that.

I think the gears are ok. No grinding sounds, just a shimmy sometimes. I think the clutch plates are going. I can't accelerate quickly anymore. If I try the RPM's start to slowly drop and the car doesn't respond.

What do you think would be the minimum amount of money I'd have to spend to replace the clutch plates? Also, is it possible to remove the tranny without taking out the engine? I ask this because my engine hasn't ever been removed and all the wires and tubes on it are very old and would most likely break if it's removed.

Thanks

Cool

The transmission can be pulled from the top (after the engine), but is normally dropped between the cross beams.

Get the fluid flushed out (and filter replaced) and put some seafoam transmission cleaner in with the new fluid.

It's slipping real bad now. I have a call in to the shop to look for a used tranny to replace it.

P.S. Would coolent leaking into the trans. fluid make it slip to the point that it looks like it's dying when it's really not?

Cool

Can anyone else not even begin to thing how coolant mixes with transmission fluid!?

thinkpad yes, coolant mixed with the fluid would probably give the symptoms you're describing.

If yous till haven't, you need to get the transmission fluid flushed before you do perminant damage.
