Manual vs. Auto

I know that manual trannys put out more power and go fast but can't seem to understand completely why? I checked howstuffworks.com and other places but they were unclear. I think it has to due with the power pull the auto has, is it a weight issue has well. It would be cool if someone could clear this up, or point me in the right direction, cause I'm trying to decide if my next car should be a manual or auto. I do some street racing, but not with the camry. I also have a Nissan Maxima 98 V6 stock.
Thanks.

Great question!

There were several discussions of this in the Tech/Competition Forum. Check it out. 8)

auto trannies are kind of like a rubber band (hehe).............when you slam your foot on the pedal, it has to wind up to get to the desired gear

so basically its not responsive, and also it will shift through gears when you dont exactly want it to.

manual trannies are ten times more responsive.....you and you only are the one controling when the gears change and theres no waiting for the tranny to wind up before you get your power

autos are only for daily driving and are meant for nothing else

One thing I have noticed that I think is very significant, is that auto trannys lose alot of power when shifting. Even when you're doing power shifting, it doesn't do any good. For example, if you're at gear 1, and start taking off, and when you want to shift to D2, you gotta let the gas padel go, and wait for a second or two ( ), and then shift (althou u may also shift to D2 before leaving the padel, u lose slightly less) then it will change its gear. This causes all the rev'd up power that you had from gear 1, to be basically lost!!! :

Might be little confusing, but thats why auto trannys suck if you're looking for the most power out of your engine!

Thanks guys that was very helpful! Would a tranny swap be worth it $ and powerwise. If it costs thousands(?) , would it be better spent on a turbo or an engine upgrade? How involved is it? SBC? Also, how the hell do you get a clutch pedal in their?? :-?
