If you want to do this the cheap and ghetto way, a steering wheel puller is not really necessary.

1. Remove your horn fuse so that you don't piss off your neighbours when fudging with the steering wheel horn pad.

2. Remove the philips screw(s) holding the horn pad in place. If your car is equipped with an airbag, you will need torx bits to remove the torx screws.

3. Grab the horn or airbag pad with both hands (top and bottom) and yank it off the wheel.

4. Remove the large nut holding the steering wheel on the column. At this point, note the posistion of the steering wheel for re-installation.

5. Instead of using a puller, you can remove the steering wheel at this point by whacking the wheel from behind with your fists. The key here is to use both hands and apply even force to both sides so it comes straight out.

Caution: if the airbag is removed, do not turn the key to the ACC or ON position, otherwise, the airbag dash light malfunction will be triggered.

This reminds me of somthing I read about a guy who knocked himself out cold while pulling on the wheel. His mom came out and found him unconscience in the front seat with the steering wheel on his lap and a bigass red bump on his forehead, haha.
