better still, go to autozone and they will hook up ur car to a handhelp gadget.
they will tell you a code and most likely, tell you the problem.

then go fix it at dealer or a repair shop.

Autozone and Advanced Auto should give u the code and the description of the code...search on TN for the code or some of the key words in the code (like, for example, "check engine AND egr" or "CEL AND egr")

my dealership told me (australia) that you cant buy any tool to read out the codes, only toyota make and distrubute them. But they offered to read the codes for free.

In my adventures upside down near the pedals, i found a lovely little plug labeled "OBD - II"

If you get failed ignitor or bad oxygen sensor, i can tell you to check the plug that attaches to the coil pack... Took me 2 cable ties to fix $672 worth of "broken" parts...

enjoy

most common, problems.

EGR sensor
OXY sensor
or could be something minor as something is blocking the air intake..

pull the code from autozone / advance auto parts and they will diagnose it for you for free.

It could also be something as minor as a loose gas cap. OBD II cars (1996 and newer) will set the check engine light if the gas cap is loose. This is because a loose gas cap is letting gas fumes (pure hydorcarbons) escape in to the atmosphere.

Oxygen Sensor question......

A friend read out the codes and it indicated oxygen sensor. He said no way to know which one (I gather there are two). Is there a way to tell?

How expensive are the parts, and how hard are they to install?

Appreciate the help

The code will tell you which sensor is defective. For a 4 cylinder the code number would indicate either bank 1 sensor 1 (the one in front of the converter) or back 1 sensor 2 (the one after the converter). A V6 usually has 3 O2 sensor. Get you friend to give you the code number. If he can't, go to Autozone and they will read the code for you for free. Then go to this site to clarify which sensor is defective:

http://www.iequus.com/obd_def.asp

If you want to replace the sensor yourself, the sensors are usually around $135 at the Toyota dealer. You can purchase a generic aftermarket sensor for around half of that, but you will have to reuse the connector that came with your old sensor and splice the 4 wires on to the new one. Most of these aftermarket sensors come with a kit to splice and seal the wires. You will need either a 22MM or a 7/8 open end wrench or a special O2 sensor socket. These sockets are usually around $10-$15 at most auto parts stores.

If someone is throwing a cel for the egr, is this something they can drive the car without having to worry about fixing it? will it actually hurt the car?
