A few months ago I was looking in the owner's manual and it said that when your car is ten years old, you should take it in to have the airbag serviced. Anybody think it's worth it? I mean, it's the airbag after all so I think it'd be worth it - just wondering how much of a priority I should make it. My car was manufactured 1/95 so that's what got me thinking about it.
Even at ten years old, the car is great . Just minor issues with the interior (sagging headliner, rubber around the doors coming off) but mechanically, it's in tip top shape.

No schitt, my DX was manufactured in 1/95 and I'm having the same problems you are with the rubber strips and the roofliner!! (which I am taking off and regluing as soon as I figure out how the dome light and Oh Shit handles in the roof come out!).
Now that I've thrown that nice little irony log on the TN fire, I gotta be honest and say I never heard of servicing the bag after ten years... I'll look into it and see what I did up.

The airbag system is self-testing, and DOES NOT turn itself off at 10 years (and every year afterwards) as Toyota tells you it does.
If the ABS light is on all the time, then go to Toyota (after checking the code tos ee if it's something you can fix. Like a dead sensor)

if you are trying to remove the dome light and handle it isnt to hard. The handle should have to plugs or covers for the screw you can remove that will expose the screws that hold them in place. Remove the screws and you are done pretty much. The dome light pretty much the same remove the lens from the dome light and there should be a couple of screws that hold it in place. Remove the screws and you are good to go.
When I was at Toyota we never really had anything that as old enough to check at the ten year interval. I got a 94 and the airbag light is on so I called one of my buddies I used to work iwth and asked him. He said the light does not come on a t ten years to tell you to check them or anything like that. They only come on when there is a a problem. So I obviously have a problem jsut to lazy and cheap to find ot what it is.

Just try to reset your AirBag Computer from the service plug. Sometimes the AirBag light comes on if you do something on your car and you left the key in ACC or on pos.
Regards
Yeah I tried that already. That is not the problem. When I was talking to my former coworker he was telling me that over the course of time I have been gone they ahve had lots of Cmry's iwth bad clock springs, as he called them, behind the airbag itself in the steering wheel. He said they break and jsut have to replace it and should be good to go. I think I am going to try and get my warranty to cover it though so it wont cost me much.

My airbag light came on about 4 weeks ago and i tried the tc and ab trick but it doesnt work oh well i just have to be careful out there
LOL!!! Be careful out there, huh? Nobody goes "shit.. my airbags works.. let's go crash baby!!" But yeah, I haven't checked my airbag.. ever.. I guess when (if I ever do) crash, I'll find out the real deal with Toyota dependability and reliability 'cuz that's what moving you forward.
I love that.. Moving Forward..
Why the hell would Toyota make a system to shut off the airbag after ten years? That seems like some half-assed stupid-shit thing to do.
I've been waiting for this topic. My Airbag light is always ON and wonder what is wrong with it. Called the stealer/dealer and they said it's $90 for diagnostic. WOW $90 again! So, I backup and just hangup. Search the TN and tried the Tc and Ab it did not work. I've search more and tried the diagnostic mode by shorting the Tc and E1. It gave me error code 14. Now my question is how difficult and complicated it is working with the Airbag. Do anyone ever experience the same problem and have tried to fix it. Please post the fix and help us noob. Thanks in advance!
Please note the "RESET" of the Airbag computer does work, but if you are not on 100% timing with alternating the connections it will not work. I did not mange to reset the Airbag computer with just wires. I purchased a switch with on off on, with this switch it works perfectly. Just try it, the switch cost me $2.50 Canadian. Its worthy to try before you spend money at the dealer.
i asked the dealership about that when i was up there when my car became 10 years old this past may and they told me it was unnecessary and to not worry about it.
uh, before you go about "just resetting it", why dont you be smart and check the codes first if the light came on....
It depends when (why) the airbag light came on.
Your Airbag light may come on if you have the battery for while disconnected, of if you (happened to me) change the radio. I found out, that if you leave the key in "ACC" and work on it the Airbag light will come on.
So if you know the reason why it came on you do not have to check the codes. If there is trouble with the system itself the airbag light will come back on.
