I went to a junkyard and I got a 93 5SFE Valve cover. Well after cleaning it and trying my best I got it down to this (shown in pics ). I have no idea what it is, gunked grease/oil or algae, it was sitting in the trunk of the camry (coupe )
So is there any way to clean it up better? I dont have open access to a pressure washer, but if I NEED one I can get it.
Also the Tube that runs to the top of the valve cover, is a little cracked, anything I can do about it, its just a vacuum tube?

Edit* here is the pic of that plastic piece.

Every surface (that doesn't rub against something else) in contact with oil varnishes and get's buildup on it.

Dude, That is perfectly fine...but a good idea would be to get it sandblasted and powder/ceramic coated..that would promote oil shedding and add a bit of bling to the bay.
i see you are using water + some kind of soap for this. you need MOAR POWAR in terms of cleaning solvents. go to walmart or autozone and get a few cans of carb cleaner. the stuff in there will dissolve all that gunk REALLY FAST. it is cheap too, about $1 a can, get 3 or 4 to make sure you have enough to do the job. if you want to get the thing really clean get some castrol super clean purple degreaser. walmart has that too, it is about $7 a gallon for highly concentrated stuff. the stuff is so strong you really never have to use it straight up. I would mix up a solution 1 part cleaner to 5 parts HOT water (boil it if you can) and throw that in a bucket and drop the valve cover in there and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. that thing will look like you just got it from the parts counter if you do the brake cleaner and castrol degreaser. I'm not sure where you see a crack in those pictures. if you think it is cracked get a little jbweld on that crack and it'll be just fine. you don't want to screw around with vacuum leaks, your car will run like shit.

Ill try some of that ^^^ above, thanks! The Vacuum hose ( its not the one on the side, its fine there) Its the top one. I didnt see how it was mounted on this car, because it was in the trunk. Its the top one. On the valve cover there is a plastic round piece that sits on top and I guess the vacuum barb nipple thing comes out of it. The platic peice cracked off on half of it, other half is there. What importance is it, I can get pics tommorow, its in the garage, frankly im a little too tired to get a pic. But can I transfer that barb to the new cover?
a can of engine degreaser +used toothbrush and some elbow grease should make it all better
Well...
I first looked at it. It was bad, the whole underside was covered in either or both, old oil and/or algae, mildew whatever because of it sitting in a trunk for so long. I used an acidic algea killer and scrubbed it with a wire brush. I let it sit in a solution of hot water and that algae crap to clean up some then I sprayed the rest of my engine cleaner on it and got a lot of the crap out, but that pic above is after a few hours of work.
dude that castrol purple shit is super uber strong if u do use it wear chem. gloves i had a friend who was stoned and didnt listen to me he said his hand felt like magma was on it and yeah it will oxidize the alum.
