4th Generation not another headlight question... thanks QANTAS =]

hey all... This isn't your typical headlight question and i have searched... I also dont think many people have tried this either...

I have aquired some A-330 and 747 landing lights

there ratings are;
13V, 250W,
28V, 1000W... yeah baby, bright...

anyway, i'm playing around with my gen4 V6 and trying to fit the 250W lights as the globe fits in the headlight (the 1000watter globes are abount 6-7 inchs long) reflector. For a start they will need air cooling other wise i reckon they will melt it, but the biggest problem is power.

When i start the car and hook just one 250W globe direct to the battery, the engine revs drop considerably. Revving the engine doesn't make the lights brighter either. What i want to know from TN is how can i increase my power from the Generator? Does any company make a custom power source for the V6 engine as a simple bolt on set up?

Also i'm still a little un-learned with respect to genertors in cars. They get energy in the form of kinetic energy, and make electrical power. But as different things on the car are turned on and off, how is the power regulated?? Where does the excess power goto? All into the battery?

thanks all

sounds awsome. let the light shine- but maybe you could use a computer cooling fan to push that air around, just a suggestion

I have heard of people having problems running 100+ watt "rally" bulbs because of the heat the bulbs generate. You may run the danger of melting your housings and/or wiring. Use a good quality relayed harness like the ones for Hella auxillary lights and try hooking up one bulb outside of the housing and turning it on with the engine running for the amount of time you think that you will actually have the bulbs on and see how hot it gets before installing them and getting stranded in the dark somewhere.

long story short, you need a better alternator

if you want to run everything in your car along with TWO constant drains of 250w.....have fun....

yea ^^^ a bigger alternator (i don't think a Highlander will be big enough, gonna have to do a web/google search for "Iraggi alternator") is necessary, then prolly battery (optima or similar), then upgrade grounding (ie Big 3)

to run these lights at that wattage YOU CANNOT USE THE FACTORY WIRES!!! as in u can't just cut & splice into the factory headlight wires, u will fry them! u need to use a relay and prolly have to use like 8ga. to 10ga. wires just to supply the power...

if u really want brighter lights, get some HIDs and retrofit projectors in there...

BTW, use some bench power supply and post pics of lights and how far they shoot the light...

Im still having problems with my new custom projectorss and im hoping you guys would be able to help out

i just got in my set of custom projector headlights....i'll put up pics when i get home, they look awsome. 2wickedtoyz made them for me, the only problem is that they dont project any light from 9003 bulbs, i need help with that

That Black paint on the top, i dont want it there, becuase it stops the projection of light into the projector. Any ideas?

as soon as i get home, i posting a MILLION pics of my new headlights, i really think you guys will like them (If i can get them to actually make light so that i can see when im driving!) .

4th Generation

i thought i had it covered and never thought of the wiring!! thanks guys, would'a pissed me off burning out a loom somewhere...

last night i attacked a spare 60W main highbeam globe, i replaced the 60W with a hella 100W, not too much difference... All i did was pull up on a straight flat road and cover each light...but

hooked the 250W upto the battery and it alone shat all over my stock setup, the 2 60W high's, and 55/60's lows... And the 250W has a wide reflector...

just to get a few things straight in my own head (been new to playing with cars), the simple story of headlights is, battery to relay to globes... nothing in between like fuses's or anything limiting current?

yeah your right, i'm gonna win every headlight war!! burn there shadow into there seat!!!

cheers all for your help

yea, u'll win every headlight war but u'll attract the popo more than a mosquito to a bug zapper...

i honestly dont know how u would set it up since i don't even think they have relays that handle that kinda power. so unless u just connect the lights to ur battery before u start to drive, i dont think there will be a way to turn them on using the factory switch...

upgrade ur grounding (search for "Big 3")

i would recommend u buy some amplifier wiring:
10ft of 10ga. power and 10ft. of 10ga. ground
2 inline fuses (audio style) that use blade fuses (the kind in ur fuse boxes)
2 40A Maxi fuse

4th Generation slight problem

thanks guys for all the help with respect to wiring and fuses relays etc, but i have another problem atm...

it appears when you stop looking at the road while your driving taxi's stop...

front right end all pushed in, lights smashed beyond use, radiator mounts popped, radiator ok, bonnet displaced and bent, and the only serviving quater panel on my car, the front right, has the tiniest bend in the corner of it...!

not sure when i'm getting it back, insurance all covering it...

thanks for the help and i'll keep you updated on the progess of the lights...

cheers all

before you fry something

please, browse www.hidforum.com

the guys on there are really knowledgable about their stuff, including LEDs, HID, auxilary lighting, wiring, halogens, everything lighting related. I'm sure you can find a relay that will handle 250w through somewhere like digikey, but don't expect it to be cheap.

Maybe you should just do one 250w light, as it seems to be an insane amount of light.

oh shit, I forgot to read the last post all the way.

That sucks, I hit a car today too in my dad's truck. I hope you and the other guy are all right, money isn't as big a deal as a hospital visit and resulting complications.

Good luck with everything man.

Australia shafted

hey all...

been along time since i posted but here's the update...

while still waiting for the other 250W globe to come in, me and a few mates got board. We did a REAL DODGY job of setting up just one globe! I mean, we mounted just one, using the bolt that holds the left side of the grill in with a tacky mount to the globe.

There was no switches or relays, just some house wiring we found lying around. To use them, start the car, pop the bonnet, wrap the wire around the battery terminals.... thats it... no low beams!!!

bent the bracket around a little to "aim it" somewhere remotely down the road... could see nice and far, every thing was bright, expect the bracket was pretty shitty, it would bounce up and down with every bump, got pretty annoying to drive with...

to scerw my plans in the arse, QANTAS has installed new security messures, basically, metal detector on the way in and out of maintance... meaning, i wont be getting the other globes...

sorry to disapoint guys...
didnt take photos yet as the guy with a **working** digital camra isn't around...

was quite fun though driving around until a car came, where we would have to pull off the side of the road and point the car into the paddocks... maybe some aircraft saw us that are on approch near us...?

Look You are drawing around 20 Amps, so check your set up, and put in a 20 to25A fuse unless you want to take the consequences.
