2nd Generation Radiator Resevoir Bubbling

1988 Camry I4

For the past week or two, after I drive for at least an hour, the radiator resevoir bubbles like mad upon shutting down the car. Steam comes out the resevoir and it sounds like I'm cooking Pho(vietnamese soup) under my hood. It's crazy. My mechanic says it might be the Heater Coil or Head Gasket(I'll be replicating the problem and bringing it to him tomorrow). My friends think it's a water pump issue(replaced last year) and my co-worker thinks it's a clog in my radiator. My car does not overheat. Any guesses to what is happening?

And while I'm here... Ever since I've had the car, it's never cold started on the first try. Always on the third try. I don't mind so much except when it's late at night, outside the strip club and the dancers are walking out to their rides. Major and minor tune-ups do not solve the issue. Time for a new ignition, perhaps?

A clog, bad water pump, or bhg (blown head gasket) would cause the engine to overheat.

I would start by checking/replacing the simple stuff like the radiator cap. If the radiator cap is not holding pressure, it could cause fluid to overflow into the reservoir.

As for the cold start issue. Check the cold start injector and cold start timing switch.

The cold start injector is in the middle of the intake manifold. Right below where it says EFI.

You can remove it and clean it with brake parts cleaner or carb cleaner. The little hole on it gets clogged with carbon buildup.

Cold start timing switch screws into a neck, which is bolted to the right side of the cylinder head.

How to check the cold start injector and start injector time s/w (cold start timing switch):

Cold start injector
----------------------

2 - 1: 12 volts while start injector time s/w is closed and starter cranking

Start injector time s/w
---------------------------

Points open above 35C (95F)

2 - 1: Approx. 20 - 40 ohms below 30C (86F)

2 - 1: Approx. 40 - 60 ohms above 40C (104F)

2 - ground: Approx. 20 - 80 ohms

P.S. Pho is vietnamese noodles. Its some good shit.
