Replace Sparkplugs, Remove intake Planum

Hi, Everyone,

I am going to replace my rear bank 3 spark plugs of my 1mzfe engine this weekend. I am going to uninstall the intake plenum to make more room for my job. my question is:

Do I have to totally uninstall it? I know there are serveral bolts(maybe 5) on the engine. Also it connects with other side, like vancum, air XXX. I am not sure how to undo those.
Are they air condition related? I want my air condition still working after I reinstall everything back.

Any help would be great appreciate.

Thanks.

You will need a replacement Intake manifold gasget...
BUT.. I replaced the back 3 on my 1MZ-FE and did not have to remove a thing.
It is a PITA, but you can do it.

the intake gasket is metal and i really doubt it will need changing, you could clean it off, but you can change if you want,

yeah if you are flexible and you have good extension for sockets and whatnot you might not need to remove the plenum

I can answer you with a bit more specific since I've done it. There are two ways and
I did the first way (by removing air intake since I need to fix a rear valve cover leak
anyway).

If you do the first way, you need to take off the air intake assembly. In order to
take that off, you need to disconnect around 10 vacuum hosts that are in the way.
It is not hard to disconnect the hoses, but make sure you mark them so that you
can put them back later.

But, you also need to disconnect two coolant running hoses and this requires you to
drain coolant first (then, you need to refill coolant later, use Toyota type!). The whole
process has nothing to do with air contitioning.

The gasket you mentioned is made of metal and I did not change it. It seems to be
fine.

Regarding the second way which does not requires you to remove the air intake, you
need to buy some special sockets. You can search this forum and I remember seeing
it here.

I suggest you buy a Haynes manual and follow it.

Good luck.

Hello,

I read some where that to install new spark plug you don't have to remove anything.

Please do a search.

Hope this helps.

I did my gen 3 v6 with just a variety of extensions and a universal joint. No need to remove the intake, just tinker around a bit.

I think I used a 4" and a 6" extension with the universal inbetween the 2 extensions (maybe one plug took two 6" extensions with the univissal in between). I have a rachet where the head can adjust to just about any angle too. I used the special spark plug socket the the rubber center so it 'gripped' on to the sparks plugs for easy in and out.

The first time it took me under one hour to replace all six and I am NOT a pro mechanic at all, maybe a weekend warrior at most

and don't forget the anti-seize compound! After those plugs are in there for 60K or more they will be a beeeeyatch to get back out at the next change if you don't

yes if you have ...like mentioned already... a good assortment of tools, you can just go AROUND and poke things under the intake to get to the sparkies :P
