2nd Generation Loose Nuts

Well, when i worked at toyota in the late 80s, there was a big deal as to how tight to make the big nuts holding down the valve covers on the f heads, then 2 years ago I bought an 89 camry with a 3sfe and I just was given an 88 with a 3sfe, I changed the valve cover gasket on both but the 4 big nuts keep loostening themselves up about every 2 months or so. I dont know anybody at toyota anymore, but was there ever a fix for this?

Ya, make them tighter and use anything kinda spongy as a mild thread locker.
Like the camshaft bear cap lb-ft being 10-15 lb-ft. bawahahahahaha Mine were backing themselves out at 20lb-ft, AFTER cleaning the oil out!

IMHO Toyota... Really under-shoots the torque they need on many things. (Valve covers, I don't know. Mine don't leak with new gaskets if I don't even put bolts in them)

One thing I learne dbefore getting new VC gaskets tho... Mine were leaking at Toyota spec also. My advice is to put the first two/four bolts in, and tighten one down untill you see the gasket compress well.

Then transfer that to everything else.

the valve cover is suppose to be like 25ft/lb but i did like 30 because 25 feels so small hehe
