Hey guys, i got a 2000 Camry V6 with 113,000kms on it (70,000 miles) and I have not changed the timing belt yet, when I went to my dealership the guy said we usually change them at 150,000 kms (93,000 miles). He also said that Toyota engines are built a way that if the timing belt goes (breaks) the engine just stalls and NO damage is done, where as a Ford or a Honda you could cause serious damage.
I am wondering if this is true? And also would like a suggestion on when I should change my timing belt, thanks a lot!
the part about the belt breaking and not hurting anything is true, I had one snap on my 95 5SFE and it did nothing, just stalled like the mechanic said. You should probably change it about every 75k miles, mine snapped at 76k, so yea

i agree change it sooner rather than waiting... or you could open up the top of the case and take a peak at it and see if it is cracking or anything... if not, then you have a little time. i'd still suggest changing it sooner rather than waiting for the 150k km mark. normally they say to change it at 75k - 85k miles. i figure... you can never be too safe. if you have the money to do it, i'd say do it.
i think the manual says 90K.
i have a 2000 also.
the older gen camry would say, 75k
oh so on an older car you would have to change it sooner cause it isnt the same exact belt?? haha. its the same shit dude.
1 thing you will learn if you start doing any serious work, is that manuals mean shit. there is always good info in manuals but you will learn more than the manual has in it with real life experience. by now i could prolly write manuals on certain parts of the car and processes.

thanks for the kind words and opinion.
I am just stating the obvious, as per manual.
water pump is by the belts and since you are there, it is worth while to change it while doing the belts. Cheaper that way as opposed to the pump failing and you pay extra for labor to just change that.
original toyota water pump is about $95-104
thanks for the advice guys does the water pump usually go around the same time the timing belt does? Im kinda short on cash right now and will probably push it to around 125,000kms, im gonna inspect it and see how bad it is if its bad then doing it next service.
If the pump goes, the rad. fluid will trash the new timing belt. Replacing the pump is cheap insurance. I would replace the T-stat too while you are at it.
