I've had this problem on mine before. I own a A540E V6 Tranny also. My problem was the gear-selector instrument on the dashboard. This runs off the ECU. The ECU also controls the shifting solenoids. The illumination for this instrument was shorting out one of the wires that ran to the ECU because of 2 blown diodes. Once I disconnected this, the transmission was fine again. It was playing funnies with the ECU, so it was "slipping". Sorta like NEUTRAL, but under acceleration, the car would slightly edge ahead. Doesn't take too much to test if thats the problem, just take the front part of the dashboard off, where the "gear selector" lights/instrument is. Theres 2 plugs on the back, disconnect them and see if the car runs ok. If it doesn't, then its something a little more serious, like possible shift solenoid problem or torque converter slippage.
