3rd Generation My Tires Rub

i have a 93 camry v6 and i just put on some 17's with 215/50/17 rubber. the problem is that they rub the fender, i have been told that if i roll the fenders that it would be ok, but would it get better if put a new suspension in because i have been told that if i put a firmer set of springs and struts in then it would not be able to rub the fender. what do you guys think?

^won't help if offest/width is his problem.

A firmer setup will help...but not much, cause lets face it--all the aftermarket springs for our cars are soooffttt. Struts will help more. I still rub will a car full of people over bumps and that is with proper offset, rolled fenders, and Tokico blues. Rolling is the best bang for the buck--but take your time, NEVER force your paint

Or you could get lower profile tires... that'd help.

Well you need to give us more information, does it rub when you're turning or braking? Do you have stock suspension? What's the offset of the wheels?

Rolling the rears won't help scrub in the front...in fact, the only thing that will help is:

1)Not turning to "lock"
2)Smaller tire (e.g. lower profile, smaller width, smaller height)
3)Rim that is narrow...I think 8" width is about it on a camry

As for the rears, FOR YOU it is especially important that you don't damage the paint. You live where roads are salted.

To help you gauge where your tire is rubbing have about 3-4 people sit in your back seat (that oughta do it ). Run your fingers along the inside edge of your rear fender and see where contact is being made. This is where your efforts should be concentrated. Keep rolling until the MAJORITY of the rub is out (you may not be able to eliminate it--like me).

If you damage your paint you MUST address it. Either have it repainted or go buy some paint that matches your color in a touch up spray and do it yourself. Or you could use a rubberized undercoating since rocks are likely to strike it. Be sure to tape everything off.

the thing is that the front tires dont rub, only the back tires rub on a full load. i am gonna go and do the 4 people in the back of the car and see where it is rubbing in the back. in the front even when i lock the wheels it still does not rub at all. there is enough room for it to make it.

Actually.... several people (including myself) have already mentioned that getting lower profiles will help...

I had 215/50/17. That was the size that Tirerack said would fit. I had the exact same problems where the rear tires would rub. Like the others have said, either change the tire size, or roll the fenders.

215/50/17 matches the closest to the stock size 205/65/17.

Tire Size Calculator

The second number is a percentage of the first number guys.

Ufoz Is Right. You Can Also Get Spring Compressors They Sell At Any Auto Parts Store. They Come With 2 Small Plates And 2 Bolts. You Reverse Them, Put Them On The Second Coil And Begin To Open Them. They Will Open Up The Coil Giving You Clearance. I Did This Over 5 Years Ago With My Cam When I Put On 17's With Intrax Springs And It Worked. I Now Have 18's And It Is Still Working. I Can Pack The Cars With A Lot Of People And It Doesn't Rub.
