Hot weather issues and maintenance

I was driving around town today on the freeway and noticed that my car did not feel right. It felt slower and less powerful than normal. When I started going up the mountain, the power loss was very noticeable.

The temperature in that town today was 105 degrees F and it is approx 85 deg. F where I am living right now. It felt better when I got near my town and it was 90 deg F. Is this power loss exptected because of the higher temperature. If it is due to that reason, I'm guessing there's not much I can do.

Summer is rolling around and soon it will be 120 degrees F here. So I guess my car will feel even slower. Will I have to do any special maintenance because the higher temperatures? Daytime highs will be 120 deg F and night time will be maybe 75 deg F to 85 deg F. I am also residing in an area where the altitude is 3000 ft if it makes any difference.

Considering my operating conditions, is there any special maintence that I should do to keep my car running?

I have a 2000 Camry 2.2L. The car is more or less stock. Only the basic maintence stuff has been changed out: oil and air filters, spark plugs and wires, transmission fluid and coolant.

I do an oil change every 3500-4000 mi with 5W-30 oil, usually Castrol or Valvoline dino oil and a Napa Gold (Wix) oil filter and rotate the tires.

Last week, I just did coolant flush (Toyota Red type) , DIY transmission fluid flushed out with Castrol Dex III (drain 1 quart fluid from the hose leading to the radiator and fill the same ammount back and repeated for 10quarts), changed spark plugs (Denso) and wires (NGK), changed the air filter (Denso), and changed the PCV valve (Napa).

I will keep an eye on the tire pressure as the ambient temperature goes up.

You should... uh... change your oil every 3000.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.

Cool

Stop with the winter weight oil. Grab some straight synthetic 30 or 40 weight oil. Change it at the start of fall.

another question is: do you run a Short air intake? If so, it could be sucking in hotter air than usual.

Does changing oil @ 3000 miles vs 3500-4000 miles make a lot of difference? Toyota recommended interval is 5000 miles.

What difference does 30 weight oil make compare to 5W-30?

My car has stock air box/intake. Only modification is the Denso air filter (not reusable)

Even though Toyota recommends 5000, I still change mine every 3000... why? Because I feel too guilty about making my engine work with oil that I feel needs to be changed... a friend of mine has a bmw 330Ci and changes his oil every 7000-8000 miles even though bmw suggests 15k.

To answer your question, though... yes, I believe it does make a difference. An extra thousand miles can change oil quality drastically.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing as Toysrme.

I think for the 2.2L 5W30 is for colder weather, for your summer country you should be using 10W30.

Some people also change their oil filter twice as often as the oil.
