4th Generation Rattle in Trunk

Ok. It isn't the jack or the spare tire or anything. EVERY bump or little thing in the road makes a rattling thing in the trunk start to happen. With the seat down, you can hear and FEEL something knocking in the front, right side of the trunk (if you are standing facing the car from the back). Any idea what this could be?

Rear sway bar bushings? Mine were shot so I had to get new ones. $16 a piece from Toyota, then took it to a shop and paid $40 for the install for 30 mins of work.

I had the same problem on my wife's 98. I too went through everything in the trunk as that's where it seemed to be coming from. It wasn't inside the trunk. It was the sway bar bushings, as a few others have suggested. A quick test is to raise the rear of the car and support it securely on jackstands. Now crawl under there and grab the sway bar and try to move it side to side. If you can move it, then the bushings are shot. They are relatively cheap and not too hard to replace.

Could also be the tension rods that hold the trunk up. Also check the sway bar end links(as well as the bushings)
