exhaust problems, what do I do?

I just found out my whole stock exhuast system is corroding and the dealer quoted me 900 bucks to replace the muffler, b-pipe, cat converter, and front engine pipe for my 1994 V6 LE Camry.

My friend told me I can find cheaper alternatives. Is that true?

I guess my main question is what alternative parts can I get for a cheaper price and where can i get it. Any help is appreciated because my exhaust is already making some weird noises.

stop in a muffler shop, they should be able to quote you less than that - usually dealership quotes are high because of the part/labour cost

they ARE just bent metal tubes, how much could it be?

Go to the muffler shops in your area. They could do it for less than half of that. The dealerships are ripoffs for anything. They just want to sell you the car; they don't give a damn about anything after that.

I disagree Edmond. Most dealerships make their money in service.. not in selling the car. If you come back for service they'll make their money even if they take a loss on the car at the sales part of it.

To answer the question... yes you can get it done for about half that but it won't be mandrel bent tubing.. just crush bent.

Muffler $100 (for a good one off the net)
cat $100? I've never priced on
resonator $100? I've never priced one
install for all the piping and everything <$200

So around $500 everything

US DOLLARS

this probably isn't true everywhere, but around here, some shops will let you bend your own pipe and not charge you anything...your best bet for that is going to a shop on a saturday afternoon when the owner/manager isn't there...I knowed it's saved us quite a bit...

Take a look at it yourself. Rarely does everything go at once. Buy the piece that is bad and put it in yourself. The sections bolt together.

Where the sections bolt together, is there some kind of gasket or do you just put paste between the sections? My exhaust has just started rattling like a b*&^ch so I wouldn't mind removing it and giving it a clean up.

I know and I agree with you that they make money in service. But I think it's more work and a bigger hassle for them to have satisfied customers in the service department.

What is the likelihood of everything going wrong at the same time? My thought is they see this as a money making opportunity to replace everything in one shot while you don't need everything replaced.

Most muffler shops won't even charge to put it up on the lift to take a look and then shoot you a quote.

Yeah, there's a metal compressible gasket in each section joint. When you change a section of pipe, you'll also have to get the gaskets for each end. They cannot be reused, but they don't cost that much so no big deal.

I agree. He can use this as an excuse to free up some air flow though while he's at it though

Definitely true. But if he's on a tight budget like I always seem to be, you just replace what needs to be replaced.

Don't a lot of places even sell pre-bent pipes? You could install it yourself and save some more money.
