Hi all,
Had an oil change done at the dealership today and was told the transmission fluid is dark and that the trans. pan is leaking oil. I asked what exactly it is I had to have done to correct the problem, and they told me they would have to inspect the car in more detail (and an additional $40USD) to give me specifics. About 6,000 miles ago they told me I needed a tranny flush b/c the fluid was dark, so I had that done. Now they're telling me it's leaking fluid. So I don't know what to think. The car shifts pretty smoothly...I don't notice any hesitation when shifting gears. Any suggestions or ideas? The car is a 2000 camry LE with 87,400 miles.

Reason: typo
i would personally go get a second opinion at another shop/dealership.
in the transmission flush, they do not remove the pan. so i do not think that they did it but it could leak due to the plug / washer that goes on the pan. Most likely that is the problem.
doing a flush 6k ago and saying that it's dark again, that might be a lot of B.S. from the dealer or u might have some transmission prob.
i did a flush @ the dealer and 3k later, they told me that it might be good to have a flush @ the next oil change. I checked the transmission oil myself and it looks as good as new. they are just trying to get me to spend some $$ there.
Check and see if ur transmission is dirty (black) or clean.
If you have a 2 tonne jack, try looking under ur car to see if it is really leaking transmission oil.
Re-torque your pan bolts to spec. Mine did the same thing, I retorqued them and it has been fine since. Do this first and if you still have a problem then seek help...or come here again If it has been leaking be sure to top off low levels.

The transmission pan gasket is just a piece of cork. It's $5-15 USD at most. Get the transmission flushed, the filter changed, and have them wipe the pan. Shouldn't cost half of what you just quoted.

Doesn't take much to pull the pan, clean the sludge/filings off the inside of the pan, reposition the pan magnets, the internal filter can be cleaned, and put it back together with a new gasket.
Hopefully that'll fix your leak.

I just checked the tranny fluid and it's kinda dark-redish/black in color. In fact, I checked it a few days after I had the tranny flush done and it was black- red back then too (it doesn't really help that the color of the dipstick itself is a dark gray). Anyways, the tranny doesn't slip or hesitate....which makes it all even more confusing on what to do (or not to do?). I'll see about getting a 2nd opinion soon.
$26 for the filter and also the gasket i bought mine and it was rubber this time the first time it was cork, thats was for the kit at Napa same price for it at Checker
Hi all,
Went to Firestone to get a coolant system flush done and asked about the tranny fluid. They say it's highly doubtful the toyota dealership did a tranny flush considering the fluid is darkish red....they AT MOST did a drain and refill. Those dealership bastards. Anyways, the tech guy at Firestone says I'd be fine driving it another 15k miles and then getting the tranny flush done. Is it worth it to go to the dealership and raise hell? I'd like to, but doubt they'd do anything to remedy the situation. Either way, I am done with this particular dealership and looking elsewhere.

Thanks for all the advice!
how much did you pay for the flush?
if u paid $99 or more
and the receipt said transmission flush, i would be going back to the dealership for my $$ back or to redo the job. personally, i would take the $$ back and go to another dealership.
if you paid less than 90$, most likely it is a drain and recycle old transmission oil, as mentioned by the firestone guys.
i paid close to $90, but I had a coupon and it was definitely supposed to be a flush. I double checked with them to make sure before they did the service. On the receipt I have it shows as "transmission flush".
my tranny "sweats" a bit in certain places but not major as in i don't need to refill or add at all. but i did a flush and didn't change the filter first so the fluid smelled burnt right away this time i changed the filter flushed it and added some trans-x and my problems(shift solenoid malfunction) stopped

90$ w/ coupon sounds right. i pd $99 w/ coupon.
i would get a credit from them and take it to another dealership to get it fixed. most likely, they did a drain - fill and not a flush. might be a mix up by the mechanic.
Worst case scenario, dispute w/ the credit card co. or BBB complaint.
Go back and raise fucking hell. Give them three options:
1) FLUSH THE SYSTEM LIKE YOU PAID FOR
That won't happen, so here's your two "better for them" options they'll probably agree to
2) They drained, and refilled 5 quarts of fluid. They've done nothing but an oil change labor and parts wise. So they should refund the balance between their oil change, and your $90.
3) They should give you 8-10 quarts of fluid, seeing how they only changed 5 quarts out of a > 12 quart system.
Don't leave until they throw you out, or you break someone's fucking nose.
