hmm....idk what you're dealing with really, but in our 83 tercel we had a different Idea. we put the 6.5" speakers in the door, better 3.5's in the dash, and ran tweeters to the kick-panels. 4 6x9's in the back, and 2 12's, it sounded beau-ti-ful. Good luck with whatever you do

i would suggest that you don't but it in the dash because you want those 6.5 aiming towards you not the groung where this could lead to possible distortion as well as not sound as loud. So i suggestion you work on some either make custom kick panels or make custom doors.

Custom Door - there are many ways to do this;

Hey guys!
I've got a 90' Camry Wagon and a Haynes manual and can't figure out for the life of me how to remove the rear speakers that are in the 'trunk.' It's basicly a component system with a 'woofer' and tweater in the quaters and 2 mids in the roof right by the hatch. I figured out the roof ones, quite simple, but the ones in the quaters; do I have to remove all of the trim to get the grill off?
Thanks!
i just bought a pair of alpine sps-100a's on ebay for like $50 including shipping. they're 4" speakers that are gonna be made to fit the 3.5" speaker box in the front of my '89. i like how they're constructed, how the speakers aren't just set in the dash but instead enclosed. anyways, i've heard of gen 2 camry owners sticking 4 inchers in there, so i'm gonna go with that and get a bigger speaker that handles more. anyways...just wanted to share that
oh yeah...6.5" alpines are goin in the back. too bad i didnt have enough for their component line, or even the cdt audio speakers...those look niiiice. the rear speakers are 5.25", but some people i've heard can stick 6.5" speakers there, which is what i'm gonna do.
now...about "imaging". get some tweeters up in the columns or on the dash, dont worry that the speakers arent facing you or as loud (pfft...not a big difference). of course they're not going to be, and even if they were, you cant turn your head this way or that without screwing that perfect stereo imaging up. higher frequencies are more directional, hence tweeters providing the imaging. i wouldnt worry about the front speakers being aimed at your knees. if you're that picky, custom make some speaker mount that stick out of the headrest alongside each ear haha.
how many watts is alpine sps-100a's ? is that 2 way? coz I got a 2 way 35w Kicker on my dash Im thinking of getting a better one..
the sps-100a's handle 25watts rms and 125 peak. yes, they're two-way speakers. you know, my friend showed me his new setup. he's got some alpine deck and he bought 4 6.5" alpines for his metro haha. but anyways, he had the volume up to around 90% and it wasnt very loud and was distorting sooo badly. i know alpine is good, but something about how his settings were eq'd just sounded like complete crap. my stock gen 2 system sounds better than that haha. $500 too...geez.
alpine has 4" component setups..they'll run you a pretty penny though.
alright, well..bad choice on my part recommending 4's for the front speakers. i got my sps-100's today and...well, after "widening" the hole in the chamber for an hour and melting away some of it with my soldering iron (so the speaker could fit through), i realized that my speaker still sticks out an inch. not cool. so, i try it like that anyways. bad idea. since the speaker is nowhere near flush with the box, alot of air escapes out of the sides and i get absolutely no bass response. true, they're 4" speakers which aren't known for bass...but when they're enclosed like that with that 4" "diaphragm" on the backside (what's the correct name for it?), it thumps GOOD.
anyways, i put stock speakers back in. genius idea came at work, a friend told me to build my own box instead of screwing with that one. genius. so...i'm gonna take apart speaker boxes i HAVE and make 2 smaller boxes. ohh...this will thump.
anyways, if you don't wanna make your own speaker box, stick 3.5"'s in there, but unless you make sure its flush, or you add something to block the open areas if there are any, you'll get no bass. just tinny sounding speakers. even the alpines sounded like crap!
i'm going 4x4x4 this time. any suggestions?
too bad to hear that. Im not really a big fun of converting or modifying unless it will look and enhance the performance thats why I stick with 3inch speakers and put an amp instead of going for a bigger speakers.. my suggestion is to get a 3inch speakers and use your original box for it since its not totally messed up yet..
i'm holding off on getting any more speakers for the cam for right now. i've got the stock speakers in there, and they'll do me fine for the time being. however, i will build a box for the alpines i have. not just so i dont have a wasted pair of speakers sitting around, but because i think it'll be a fun project, and i'm getting into custom cabinet design, so this will be my first step in learning to tune the cabinet design. however, if i stumble across some decent 3.5" drivers for real cheap, i'll probably swap them in.
also, what i said before about the 4" diaphragm on the backside of the enclosure...it's called a passive radiator, and it's an alternative to porting the enclosure; which is why these little 3.5" paper-cone drivers put out as much bass as they do.
for the subwoofer...i'm going to use a JL Audio some-odd 12" speaker, not sure of the model...in a ported enclosure. that will suffice for now, until i can save up and get my Decware dual-10" "Wicked one" cab. http://www.decware.com/whorn.htm
^above is the link to the wicked one...check it out.
i was thinking of building kick panels or door panels, but making a wooden box to stick in the stock location in the safety pad would be easier...in a way. i wanted a sealed wooden enclosure to promote the bass frequencies that would be lost otherwise, which is why i'm hesitant about building anything out of fiberglass, especially in a free air design. then again, they are smaller speakers, but i dont have a working sub unit at this time so i figured it was a decent bet.
however, if i were to make any modifications to the visible interior like that, i'd go with the door panels right now because of the simplicity versus the kick panels. i would have to take off the pocket that runs along the side of the door, but that's fine with me. wait, 88 LE, did you keep the pocket? hmm...if you did, that's an interesting way to do it. well, however i would do it, i'd want the speakers enclosed in a box and to have the most volume in that box as possible without looking too ugly. i'll make some plans and see what i can come up with.
