I have a 89 3sfe camry, and i welded on a nice, big, shiny performance muffler on my stock piping. I did this about a year and a half ago. I notice now that the car drones like a son of a bitch! How can i dimish the drone? Could it be that my resonator has gone bad, and doesn't resonate the noise anymore? Im thinking this might be it, the resonator is all rusty and the ends of it are rusty too. Also, if i used dynomat on my trunk would that dimish the drone? thanks

yea, the resonator is attached to the flex pipe, thats why i think it may be the resonator. The price of a new flex pipe is like $118 too! Alos, if i use dynomat, where should i place the dynomat. Like on the under part of the trunk lid, but should i also put it in the trunk itself?

exhaust leak from where tho? I look under the car at all the pipes and all the piping seems fine, except fot the flex pipe with the resonator. I just had the rear flex pipe that bends around the axle replaced cuz it was completely torn in half! All the pther pipes seem fine. I was thinking it may be the flex pipe, but wanted to check with others before i dish out another $100 on this car.
go to a shop, they should be more then willing to check it for free for you (more potential busines for them) if htey dont shove a brick though their window.
are you sure nothings changed and its just that only now you realise it drones?

it has changed, especially from the outside of the car. My dad will drive off, and before it used to be a nice deep tone, now its still got the deep tone, but with some raspiness and bubbling sound with it. Im pretty sure its some type of exhaust leak, or my resonator.
Do you guys think if i dynomat my trunk, it will make it quiter inside the car? Wouldnt it deaden the sound from the exhaust? Or is there specific sound deadening material i can buy to make it quieter?

i may be wrong, but it is my understanding that dynamat stops sound from transmitting through the body components of the car... it stops things like rattling from a sub. tthe drone is transmitting through air mostly, id bet. also, the drone may or may not be of the sound frequency that dynamat can absorb. Either way, the dynamat will enhance your stereo response an crispness
its prolly beating on a dead horse: are the seals/welds between all exhaust components from ex headers down solid?

any form of of sound dapening will quieten down the cabin.
sound dapening = weight, weight absorbs vibrations, more weight = less noise.

weight isnt the only thing in the equation, steel and water are extremely good sound conductors, while products like dynamat (or aluminum backed roofing tar paper, for those who dont want to put the money down for the brand) are good sound insulators. it deals with the inherent elasticity of the material (steel isnt 'stretchy' while, at some level, the dynamat is very stretchy, so instead of atoms banging together (like those chrome balls people have on their desks) and transferring the sound vebration, the molecules in the dynamat sucks up the vibration without banging into its neighboring molecules. I think the physics analogy is elastic (sound conducting) collisions, vs inelastic (sound insulating). it sucks when the materials science and physics terms are opposite, but equal, oh well.
