Changing knock sensor - any tips?

Well, Toyota quoted me approx $1000 (Cad) to replace both knock sensors.
I know that other repair shops may charge at least half, but I wanted to know how complicated of a task is this for an average DIY's.

After reading the Haynes Repair manual, it does seems a bit involved. I think it would take
me a day or two to finish.

For those of you out there who have done this yourself already, are there any tips that you could provide for this job to go a bit smoother?

What other parts/accessories do you think I would need for a proper job, ie, gaskets/seals etc?

Car: '93 Camry V6 LE. / Auto.
Engine: 3VZ-FE.

Any help is much appreciated! Thx!

shouldn't be too hard

the most complicated part is just removing the intake plenum...then it's just splicing hte new ones in place

Good luck. Make sure you when you reintall the lower intake manifold, you put the bolts back in using the correct order. I also recommmend getting new gaskets too.

Cool

You shouldn't need any new gaskets. The manifold gaskets are metal, and you have no reason to take any of the paper gaskets off but the cold-start injector.

Start off by unscrewing the gas cap to let fuel pressure off.
The cold-start injector; it's best to unplug the electrical connection, and take the two 10mm lock washers off and simply swivel it out of the way. Too much of a pain in the ass to un-do the banjo bolt and get a face full of gas.

If you're not going to drain the coolant, you *seriously* need some type of hand pump, or something you can fit into the head.

When you pull the Intake Manifold off, some gas, and a bunch of coolant is going to drump out into the V of the block, and into the intakes of the heads. Three of the intake valves will be closed (and holding coolant/gas) the other three will let it drain into the combustion chambers.

That being said. Don't worry about hydrolocking it. There isn't enough fluid that leaks out to do it.

Lemmie know if you have any direct questions.

3rd Generation

Thx to all for your input.
This is a great confidence boost!

I plan to start work on this mid next week- have to arrange a loaner car.
I'll let you know if I ran into any problems.

Also, I was thinking that while I have all this opened up, should I attempt to also
fix the oil leak? I think it's coming from the back (near fire wall) valve cover - but not sure..gotta look at this in more detail.

If you are going to go that far, I would say change the valve cover gasket too to fix the leak. It isn't that hard since you will already ahve most of the intake taken off. Good luck
