Hi all. I had a serious problem with my Camry this morning. I was accelerating from a dead stop onto the expressway on a steep uphill and then suddenly my car lost all power and shut off which led to another GEN3 Camry plowing into the back of me. Everything happened within 3 seconds and it was all over with. Once I got the car on the embankment it just kept cranking and cranking. It came on for a second and then when I hit the gas it shut right back off and still wont start as of an hour ago..
Anyone know what the problem could be ? I have 1/4 tank of gas in it.. This is upsetting because now Im gonan be scraed to drive the car long distances.. I mean it does have almost 250k miles on it.. Mine usual mechanic looked at it and said he's almost positive its the distributor and so did the guy in the Camry who hit me, he said the same thing. My mechanic said he would have to get it down to his shop to take it apart and be sure, but he thinks it is the distributor. If that is the problem, what should I expect to pay, and should I get the part new or used ?? Thanks in advance.

The guy behind you was tailgating, that's your problem!

It takes spark fuel and compression, all at the right time for an engine to run. I betsome ignition part fell off (like the main wire going from the coil to the distributor),
or your timing belt jumped a bunch of teeth.

Nah he wasnt tailgating, he said he didnt see me until the last minute. He was doing about 70 going up the hill in a 4cyl Camry, which takes a helluva lot to maintain, well anyway, he said from the looks of it he thought I was merging on "normally" for an LE 4cyl. He was a nice guy though, he also said that at the last minute, he saw the LE but no V6 next to it on the back of my trunk and knew he was in trouble cause they have shit for pickup, haha
He got my car towed to my sisters house for free of charge and even gave me a ride to my sisters job to get her car. Neither one of us had damage, just scuffs so it was all good.
As for the timing belt, I just had that changed like 9k miles ago.. The one time it did turn on, it ran smooth, I even kept the rpm's at 4 for about 5 seconds, but as soon as I put it in gear and hit the gas to move further onto the shoulder, it shut right back off and hasnt started since.

In addition to the distributor/ignition sytem, there are other likely things to check. It could be the fuel filter as amerikim said, but it could also be a defective fuel pump, especially if it's the original at 250,000 miles. Have your mechanic put a mechanical gage on the fuel rail and check the fuel pressure. This will only take a couple of minutes. Then, if it's not to spec he will work backwards from there and find out what the problem is. If it is in spec, then look for a problem in the ignition system.
My car did the exact same thing, driving down the interstate, car went completly dead.
Turned out the distributer broke, which shorted out the igniter. probably the 2 most expensive peices on the car. new from toyota they run about $5-600 each. i got them from a junk yard for $150 though.

glad your are OK and the other guy was understanding. some ppl would be calling their lawyers, ems and tow truck buddies just to get a few dimes from you.
Turn the ignition to the ON position for about 5 seconds. Then turn it back off.
Just bearly start to unscrew the Cold-Start injector's banjo bolt. (standing from the passanger's side of the car) If it spews fuel, you don't have a fuel problem. Ignition sounds more likely IMHO.

OK, that's still your problem, there is no excuse for hitting someone in the rear on a road.

Glad ur alright. Its a good thing that guy was nice though, cause no matter what any collision from behind is the other persons fault. But since their wasn't really any damage no reason to report it or anything.
But even if ur car came to a dead stop, the person behind you should have enough space inbetween them and you to stop with plenty of room. Any collision from behind can really never be the person being hit's fault.
