Pull the EFI fuse out and re-insert. By the time you can do that it's reset.

The ECU's clear instantly. More mumbo jumbo "mechanics" said thirty years ago because they don't understand electronics! I've done it thousands of times. Try it for yourself... Unplug your AFM/MAF/MAP and crank the car. You'll get a CEL because the ECU doesn't see the sensor.
Pull the EFI fuse out and put it back in immediately. CEL gone.

the only reason they tell u to wait is because of capacitors, they hold ther charge after current has stopped flowing to it and therfore depending on the size and wut kind it can keep the computer and electronics 'alive' essentially for a short while after. most will lose ther charge within 10-15 seconds others could be a minute or two, but in this case, it doesnt matter for our cars; just a quick and easy pull should work; i still take the neg, term off for a couple minutes anyway though for any sensors i change or if i add/modify any performance parts i.e. CAI, Exhaust etc that way the light will not only go away but it can relearn my driving habits and how the engine reacts under the new conditions
i think it depends on what year the car is. on an OBDI car you should be able to pull the EFI fuse to reset the CEL/MIL. however, on my 95 v6(which is OBDII) the CEL will not clear until the problem is resolved. in my case when my CEL came on i had a bad rear o2 sensor. after i replaced the o2 sensor it took a day or so for the CEL to go off. i even tried pulling the EFI fuse for a fews seconds to try and make it go off right away, with no luck.
if you had access to a OBDII code reader(autozone lets u use it for free) you could reset it right away.
Where is check engine lights logic located? I put a air/fuel sensor in place of my O2 sensor (they look alike, however are different), and I can't get the light to go off even after I put the right sensor in (of course I reset it). I learned my lesson, however I'd rather not burn up the cat, because the system senses no 02 sensor, especially after I paid $100 for a sensor that is giving no signal. .
^^^^what is ur year and model of car??? the v6's have 3 o2 sensors. im not sure about the 4cyls but my point is you may have replaced the wrong o2 sensor.

I have a '99 Avalon which of course has the 1MZ-FE. I know I changed the right sensor as I took it and had the code read at Autozone. I then went and looked up the code and it was the front one. I'm gonna go get it checked again, but I'm willing to bet it's gonna code the front one again. I'll let you know.
I forgot to ask if it'll hurt if I don't replace my sensor, or rather is sensor working even though CEL is on? I heard I can ruin cat. converter from running too rich I assume.

Edmond My CEL is permanently off.
How in the world did you manage that? I bet it would work on mine however as I also have the 1MZ-FE and it prolly has similar CEL managment???
Light can't come on if there is no light bulb in there!
Should have known, the old ostrich in the sand approach. That's prolly what I'll end up doing if running with 02 sensor doesn't hurt anything but fuel economy. I bet it would cost more to get computer than I will ever save in gas. Oh well, I tried and failed.
I had the CEL read and indeed it's the front bank sensor or the one I already changed
