Ok, stupid question: What exactly is OD?

Overdrive. I have friends telling me to turn it off while driving the freeway to save gas. I also have people telling me that it gives you better acceleration on the freeway. So what is it people?

OD stands for Overdrive. I am not an expert in cars so I will try my best not to mess up some info... Here is how it works, if you press the OD, the panel will appear an orange light saying OD OFF. What it means is the transmittion cannot reach the forth gears. To answer your question, turning the OD off does not save you gas because your engine rev high all the time and that comsume lots of gas. Personally, I found that pressing the OD will not accelerate faster. Hope this helps By the way, always use the search botton first. I believe there are some people asked about OD stuff.

yes it gives you better acceleration, better acceleration gives more gas so when your on the freeway youll be consuming more when your OD is off.

O/D on: Uses all gears, gives better fuel economy
O/D off [orange light ON]: Uses gears 1-3, gives better acceleration at the price of fuel economy. This prevents gear hunting in certain types of city driving.

I used to leave it off while going less than 40MPH but now I just leave it on all the time. It makes me think twice about having a heavy foot cuz I know the car will have to downshift = use more gas.
