Door Panel redo

I know a lot of people have redone their door panels. What is the best way to replace teh carpet section in the panels? Do I buy the material and glue in down, or is there a better/ easier way to get it looking good?

The best way is to remove that section of the door panel, if you can.

Peel the carpet off and throw it away. Glue on your new piece with 3M Super 77, its contact cement in a spray can.

Becareful when you glue the new piece on, you don't want wrinkles or air bubbles. And contact cement is some sticky shit.


You can buy the 3M Super 77 at Home Depot. It comes in a black spray can.

I agree with 88 LE except for the glue, instead of using 3M Super 77, try a little bit higher and use the 3M Super 90... It can take heat a lot better than the 77 and it's just a couple of bucks more... also when it comes to "tucking" the material in the grooves, don't get all crazy with a flat head screw driver... take your time and if possible use a plastic panel removal tool, cause you may rip the material in the end. I couldn't find a pic of one, but it is NOT the removal tool that has a "U" at the end (for removing clips)... you can also use a popsicle stick... Here's when I did mine... but Im getting ready to redo the entire door.....


all the grey will be redone with blue vinyl (the same for the insert) then everything you see that is blue Now will be painted silver, except the insert will be Silver (or seafoam as they call it) Microsuede

I didn't know 3M made Super 90. I've seen Super 77 and Super 77+.

Back when I worked at a car stereo shop, we use contact cement (the stuff you use to glue down laminate (formica countertops)) thinned out with lacquar thinner and shoot it with a spray gun.

A plastic putty knife would also work for tucking the edge of the fabric behind the panels. Becareful if your using it around vinyl though, you could scratch, poke a hole in, or rip the vinyl.

Thats why the best way to do it, is to remove whatever piece your covering (if it can be removed). This way you can wrap the fabric around the backside of the panel and glue it down.

Yeah, I was hoping that whole panel would just unscrew and pop off, but it doesn't, atleast on my car it doesn't. So how much workable time do you have before the glue dries?

should say on the can, as for the panel, its only a couple of screws, then it pops off

I'll have to try it again, but i could only take the arm rest off, not the carpeted panel

and yea dont use anything thats metal to tuck in the material cuase u could rip it, thats what happen to mine but i got more suede so ill redo the 2 front doors. the back ones are fine. and i used a shitty glue so next time ill use the 3m glue

So can ayone tell me for sure if the carpeted sections can we removed from a GEN3.5
panel, I would like to know before I try and end up breaking something...

i couldent remove the carpet that was there already so i just laid the suede over the old carpet
