I'm looking at a different vehcile a jeep cherokee *cough*. The guy looked at my car and said that he would give me 3,000 for a trade-in which I feel is a big joke. Given the fact that my car has 168,xxx miles on it and the front bumper is a little jacked up. What do you guys think is this a joke or what? I know I could get more out of it than that (I'm thinking like 3800-4000. only bought the car for 4200). Please don't flame me guys for this question cause that all it is. Any idea's what would be fair.
98 4cyl camry le
the jeep is a 97 with 72500 miles on it and their asking 6795
Nah, any dealership you go to for a trade-in will only offer you about $3000. You're better off buying the Jeep and selling the Camry private party. When I was going to trade in my '95 Corolla when I was going to get my Camry, I only had 103,000 on it, and they said they wouldn't give me more than $1500. I sold it private party for $3500.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
Yeah dude, don't bother trading it in unless you want to get ripped off. I was thinking about trading in my 99 LE (btw it seems are cars are very similar ruffry), I bought it for $8250 and the dealer would only give me $5600 for it. I realize I got ripped off on the price I paid for it, since it had 92k miles on it already, but my dad was pushing me to buy it for some reason, and he went and bought it for me! Especially since I know the dealer must have reset the check engine light to get it sold--it came on two days later, and I highly doubt it was a coincidence. He originally wanted $9000 for it, and I was like no way. Tell him $7500 and it's a deal. But then my dad came back with the title, paying $8250 for it...I think that included TT&L though. Still, you're better off not buying or selling anything from a dealership if you want the best deal on a used car.
I got my 97 for $6000, it was @ 103k miles when I got it.. but need some slight work.. (according to MD inspection: Leaky Power steerin pump and rear control arms.. but I fixed all that for about $150)

i use too work at a chrysler, jeep, dodge dealer near me and there was this guy who wanted a jeep also but he wanted to trade in his gen 3 camry and the sales man offered him 600 dollors for it, i felt bad for the guy so me and my dad bought the car from him for 800 and cleaned it real good and sold it for 1g
dealers will always give u the least amount of money for a car, if u give it to them for 3g's they will probably sell it for like 5's or so
Never do a trade in.
Always sell it in the paper for whatever kbb.com says.

Well KBB is a great source to get an idea of what your car is worth on trade in, unless it is a minvan or some SUV's. Their numbers can be a little high on those. I am in the used car business and trading your can can be beneficial for you if you dont want the hassle of selling it. If you buy the new car and then have to sell the other one ofterwards you are paying insurance and advertising and everything else to get rid of the car so now it is costing you money to sell it. I know in Tennessee if you trade in a vehicle whatever you get for the trade is deducted obviously but you only pay taxes on the difference. Can be pretty substantial sometimes. Example buy a 20000 dollar car and get 10000 for your trade. You only pay taxes on 10000. In Tennessee that can add up since our taxes average out to about 8.25-8.5%. Also most traditional dealerships where you can go in and negotiate are jsut playing with the numbers anyway so you feel better about the deal when you leave. Where I work we give you what we can buy the car for at auction if you are going to trade with us.
