The Saga continues... (Catalytic Converter Removal)[56k OK..]

Well heres the sumbitch end that was rusted on.. finally got that shit off

Here's end of it near the heatshield.. no friggin room to work
Rightside

left side

Underside

I got the nut off of one bolt... broke the nut and bolt of on the other side as you can see

And here's up under near the manifold i believe.. same thing as above.. one off... one broken

Tryin to figure out how the hell to get them off.. as they're held in there with no nuts.. just threaded in there...

EDIT: All of this would be no problem at all if I just had the room to bang around (just like sex eh? )

broken studs

Your best bet is to get a socket like tool called a stud extractor.
little claws inside the socket hold on to the stud as long as there is enough thread sticking out
*always do exaust work when engine is cold. nuts and bolts strip easily when hot.

hope that helps any

You can also drill the sumbitch out and replace it with another stud. Thats if you didn't mess up the threads in the hole from drilling. If thats the case, drill and/or tap it for a larger stud.

Another option is to drill a hole in the stud and use a ez-out.

Or just forget about the stud and use nuts, bolts, washers.

The way I get those out is to heat it up with a torch. Actually heat up the flange around it and then grab the stud whith a stud remover or vice grips and turn. Thats more than likely what any shop is gonna do. Or drill it like 88 said.

i ran into similar problems on an old civic of mine. i was doing exhaust work with just 2 ramps. it sucked. but after enough injenuity and pain and pure strength shit ended up working. took forever though. i say drill them out if you can s that would be the easiest to do if there is clearance for the drill. short of that try to heat up the flange and pul them out. or just say fuck it and shake and pul and bang until shit breaks. hope that helps. why the bolts are stuck is prolly cuz they are rusted in the flange. you can try like a rust be gone or break free type product but they dont always work. get creative and be ready for pain.

Cool

All of mine were rusted on every time I did it. Air wratchet (around 60lb-ft. Not a lot) and penitrating lube always did great. Slide a wrench onto one and turn it so it hits something and stops the bolt/nut. Which ever side you put it on.

I digress. Looks to me like a pair of gloves, and a sharp jerk downwards would separate everything in the pictures you posted ruff.
None of them ever come off really easy. You have to jerk and shove the stuff around to clear the studs.

This one isn't a thinking problem, it's a brute force problem!

Ah.. it's raining outside and my dad is tired of brute strength.. thats how we got that one side off in the first pic(Each held a blow torch on the flange, nut and bolt, until it got "Glowing red hot" and yanked and pulled and used a tiger saw when the flange separated a bit) and barely had room to work with that.. No we have NO room to work with now... maybe I'll try later. I dunno
