Wheel offset question.

Hi guys,

Alright, I found a set of 19" wheels I want to get, but the offset is 35mm...
I think that's a little too extreme for my Solara(Rear might be alright, but the front will stick out of the fender). I want 40mm I guess..
So my question is is it possible to shave the hub(?) of the wheels to get the offset down to 40mm?? Does it sound crazy?? I think it might be possible if I find some machine shop.. What do you guys think?
Thanks
Jay

Try asking a big tire shop in your area as they might know a shop that will do that. I had a set of old Fittapaldi rims that I needed to put on a car but the center hole was too small. A local shop got the hole increased, it cost about $100 for all 4.

I know that you want to shave the inner hub part (like machining a rotor), some shops may do that. However, the rim may start rubbing on the inside if it's too deep.

NEVER machine away a contact surface of a wheel. This will weaken the strucutral integrity of the wheel. Also, if you machine away too much, it may cause the closed lugs to reach the end of the stud but not hold the wheel down.

Like I've said many times, the offset is COMPLETELY DEPENDENT ON THE WIDTH, not the size. so whether its 19 or 18 doesn't matter, because you are offsetting the bigger rim with low profile tires - the overall diameter should be relative close.

As for the rim width, I'm guessing it would be a 19 x 8, in which case 40 or even 45 can be done if you are going with 225 or less width tires. Mine is 18 x 8 with 45 offset.

Thanks guys..

I would only need to shave off like 5mm... That's pretty small don't you think?? Maybe it won't stick out from the fender that bad...

Yes, I do understand offset is totally depended by the width of the rims.

I used 19X8.5 rims with 44mm front offset and 38mm rear offset as the reference point... (Many SC3 members with Solaras have 19X8.5 rims with these offsets)

The rims I want to get is 19X 8, which means I have .25 inch of more freedom either way(inside and outside of the rims) so after calculation, I found out that 35mm offset lines up with the fender almost identical to the 19 X8.5 with 38mm offset...

However, even with .25 inch of more space either way, 35mm still sticks out more than the reference 44mm offset rims...

Oh well, I am planning on getting the wheels... I will let you know how it goes..
Thanks guys.
